Just a question about a 1991 Pontiac Firebird vs a Prelude.
Well...I have a friend at school that drives around a Prelude(Not sure on the year of it) and I have a 91 Pontiac Firebird with duel exhaust...the only problem is that my tires are VERY bald but I don't have enough cash to buy new ones atm. So my friend wanted to race me, of course i agreed thinking I would dominate him...he got the jump of course because his car is complelty fiberglass, that didn't scare me because I thought I would just catch up to him and pass him after we got going, he just kept getting faster and faster and I just kept getting farther and farther away...Is this normal that a stock prelude beat me? BTW I'm running a v8 305... I also had 2 other ppl in the car with me which is an extra 300 some pounds...idk I just want to know if thats normal that he beat me...and or what I should do to beat him next time, or what upgrades I can get..Thanks guys I luv this site!

Preludes are some of the faster imports. Your 305 tbi is a slug, forget it.

The early model Preludes weren't very fast, but the later H22 type SH was pretty quick. You still should have taken him off the line, you have a LOT more torque than him, but after that I'm not suprised he walked away.
For starters.....work on your launches, get a full exhaust, and then maybe you'll have a better shot. Open element/dual snorkel, nice set of headers and a catback will add quite a bit to the underpowered LO3. Getting a posi rear with better gearing wouldn't hurt either

that extra 300 lbs probably made a big difference...
Sadly in stock form a 305 tbi fbod isnt exactly a hot rod... nothing against you l03 guys...

Loose the extra weight, and beat him out of the hole next time. That's your only chance of keeping up with him.

90up base 2L preludes have 109hp/1170kg and 133hp/1250kg, if you dont fill the firebirds thank over 1/3 and race alone you should thake a stock one.
A good half of tose preludes have 2L 140hp/1200kg and 2.2L 185hp/1385kg thats close to stock 5L-5.7L tpi's fbody's.
My first car was a 109hp prelude, i still have and use it wen it snows. Really good and light weight car.
Im uppgrading my 91firebird too, check out the tbi section you will find the answers and experimented mods from people that eat tbi's for breackfast.

I owned a 1991 Prelude with a 2.1 liter and it wasn't even in the same planet as my TPI, nor would it keep up with the old TBI engine I swapped out. Preludes are heavy for what they are and aren't fiberglass; they're hunks of steel they're just way smaller hunks of steel than an F body. It's probably a newer Prelude with an H23 or H22 in it and it's going to take some work to keep up with him. Put your car on a diet, get gears and a posi (steep ones!, 3.42 or so), put an open element and a good exhaust (including headers) on the car, tune it up and bump your timing to around 4 degrees. This shoud give you a good shot at taking him out. The TBI section is full of advice for modding everything in your actual TBI unit, I did this for my S10 and it helped quite a bit. Good luck on this one.

my LO3 back last year when i didnt have my nitrous had just a catback some nice tires on it and that was it. runs perfectly fine. me and my sisters bf who owns a newer prelude with the good motor and 5 speed were messing around. it was just me in my car and him and my sister in his. i took off messing around and he came flying by me in no time and there was no possibly way i could catch him. in your car the weight of your friends doesnt matter you still wouldve got bent over. throw some nitrous on that bad boy like me now the prelude fears me and wont mess around anymore as a bunch of other cars around in this area. FEAR MY LO3!lol

With the lo3, get a modest factory posi rear end out of the junkyard. You dont want to get too crazy with the gears or 1st will be useless, but even the same gears you had with a LSD would make the car launch hard like it should. anything gearwise over 3.42 is too high imo., argue with that and i'll back it up. high gears are for high revving motors.
like the guy before said, experiment with timing and a colder t stat. the right timing will at least make it feel more lively.
Yeah a performance rear end and some weight reduction would make quite a difference, but preludes are heavy. the ony thing they are good for is totalling so their monster motors can go in a civic.

the H22 preludes are pretty quick but I would think a decent exhaust and rear end work should give you the upper hand.
