IROC-Z vs Cobalt SS (supercharged) [Videos]
Hey guys, tried to get some video to go along with my thread. They came out ok (kind of dark), but I tried.
His strong point, highway roll, 50mph to 100ish ->Video (right click, save target as...) As you can see, I do ok, and slowly pull him. Then I get high into second, shift into third, and he pulls ahead.
My strong point, low roll, 20 mph to 50 mph -> Video (right click, save target as...) No contest there, that's what good old TPI is good for. I just let off at 50, there was no point in going faster.

He is stock. I trapped at 96 mph at the track. So i'm guessing he is around a 97-98 mph trap speed.
I don't think I did too bad though, at his best point for his car, I slowly pulled him until I shifted into third. At my best point, he stood NO chance what so ever.

Thanks! I just wish it wasn't so dark. But you can't do highway pulls like that in the day time.
Yeap, he can put $1500 into that car and be running low 13's. Then i'm going to have to buy a blower for my car.

I've seen that car there before. I was there with my SVT Contour, and my buddies 05 GP GTP. I was trapping 90mph on granny launchs (weak motor mounts + weak diff = recipe for disaster) and he was trapping 93, I think his best ET 14.7, not bad on an all stock 3800lb car. I was doing mid 15s, but with the baby launchs my 60' was in the 2.5 range, but the MPH was there.
Those supercharged Cobalts are no joke, with some modding they'll be real fast, especially when they really figure out the computer.
Do you frequent NYIRP? I get down there once or twice a year, I'd like to get my soon to be 3 gen down before the end of the year, maybe we can meet up...

nice run! i'm surprised u only trapped 96mph with those mods. i have the same mods and i trap 98 in the heat, and 100 in the fall. taller slicks i hit 96.8.
i ran a supposive stage 3 cobalt ss. he spun pretty hard off the line and i figured that much. he had a 2.2 60 foot i believe and ran 14.4 i thinks at 100 to my 1.85 60 foot, 14.0 at 95.5...but i was carryin a 175lb passenger on that run. the 60 foot tells u the race...it was no contest but after the 1/8 mile, he might have been pullin back on me.

Some of my mods listed were not installed when I trapped at 96 mph. It was also 87 degrees when I ran. But now everything is installed and i'm ready to hit up the track. Hopefully I will see a higher MPH. If not, I think it will be because of a knock retard issue. Anytime I mash the gas (WOT), I get a CRAP load of knock retard (at any speed), then the longer I go, the less and less retard I get. For example, I can floor it at 30 mph, get a crap load of knock retard, and by 40-45 mph, it will almost all be gone. Then I can go WOT from 45 mph, get a crap load of knock retard, and it will almost all be gone at 50-55 mph.
I checked for loose objects thinking something is hitting when I go WOT, but I can't find anything.
But i'd be happy trapping at 97. Trapping at 98-100 with my mods seems like kind of a long shot.

maybe its my converter...but i hear converters eat up some mph. i wouldnt be surprised in good weather that ur car could hit 98 easily. it might want a small converter. 2400stall is a good match. i got a 2800 and love it.
that knock retard tho is definately not good. lots of time gone there. maybe a bad knock sensor? timing ok?

I'd be super happy with 98 mph. Hopefully I can get to the track on Friday. As far as the timing retard, everything is in spec, including timing. I've also heard of a lot of people getting false knock when the ALDL connector is connected, who knows. No knock or pinging is present when driving (to my ears), but the sensor is picking up something. Who knows if it's false knock or not.

i had 87 TA make me a few chips...and the one thing we did was set it up to only pull 3 degrees out when knock is picked up, instead of the factory 15..
sounds liek that could help out the car alittle bit, but i have no idea what would be causing knock or false knock. hopefully it doesnt show up at the track

My friends GTP was Fusion Orange. He's already sold that and gotten a GXP, v8 power plus fwd = craziness.
As far as racing, if you can consistently cut .5xx lights, you'll have a good time. Just develop a consistent pattern for leaving and getting down the track, run your numbers every time, and go from there. I used to do pretty good in bracket racing with my Grand Am, I've got a few .50x lights to my credit.

as for the colbalt it's a totally different car it's like comparing a 3rd gen f body to an old ls6 chevelle there both nice but it take's different likes to drive and enjoy.next year the oldlady wants to go back to a small car as she misses her old calaver(driving a mini van now)so i been doing a little research on the colbalts.she has give'n me the rains to order the car and dicker with the price .a stage 2 will put down almost 250 hp and still get 30 mpg plus it can be installed by a dealer and keep it's warrenty
but i'm praing they will be install 3 by then(nothing more than a CAI) and all this for $20,000.i know it's more than most of us paid for our third gens but figure in inflation and the price of gas and who comes out ahead (in money wise)
has for the nyirp i've seen it posted in a couple different spots hereso maybe we could all get togeather and go there, maybemake it a cruise night or something.I know this year it's out of the question but maybe some 3rd gen can meet up this year.i'm hopinng to work on the iroc this winter and would like to go there late spring or so
sorry for the bad english i was never good at it

And just to expand on trap speed, it is a pretty good indicator of HP, and the ET the car is capable of. If you see a car run a 14.4 with a 105mph, you can bet he had trouble off the line. If you see a car go 9.90 at 136mph, you can bet that thing comes out of the hole like a bullet fired from a gun, (AWD, for instance) as opposed to a car thats more like a 10.90 @ 155mph. (More like a FWD car with more motor than traction.) The Trap speed gives a pretty good idea of the cars power to weight ratio, ET is how well it gets that power to the ground and down the track.
