88 GTA 350TPI vs 97 GTP SC RamAir
Hi all i'm new to the thirdgen boards.
My friend has a 1988 Firebird Formula GTA W/ 350TPI completely stock and my question would be in a 1/4 mile from a dead stop do you think my friend car will beat mine? My car: 1997 GTP Supercharged all stock except K&N filter, and a Functional Ram Air setup.
After reading up I found out his GTA makes 230HP/320lbs TQ but I couldn't find the weight of his vehicle anywhere! But my GTP makes 240HP/280lbs TQ and wieghts in @ 3450.
My question would be who do you think would win if both of us has a solid start?

It's a close match. If you both get equal launches I'd say he's going to edge you out down the quarter, but you'd pass him after that. All you need is a pulley swap and some exhaust and you'd tear him up BAD.
GTPs are cool little cars

Eh an SHO isn't anything special. They're still 15 second cars I believe. Might be wrong though. GTPs are mid-high 14s aren't they?
I drove my ex-step-uncle's GTP pace car. It was awesome, had a HUD, cool boost guage, and tons of lights mounted on the outside with a bunch of switches for them inside. It was pretty quick.

I seen stock GTP's run a 14.8 to 15.3. If you are lucky to have one in the high 14's stock, I believe you will get him. Well that also depend on how fast you guys go to.

a good running L98 should take one down...L98 comes off the line better and its smooth sailin from there. my light modded L98 caught a GTP from low roll, and he was given the half a car to a car jump. took me awhile to pull back but i got him

I'd tend to agree that it could be a driver's race, with a bit of an edge to the GTA. Both cars have similar weight, but the GTA has (at least) an add'l 40 lb/ft of torque, plus a weight-transfer advantage.
Of course, once the modding starts, it's anyone's game...

My cars not stock but i let a stock gtp floor it first at 30mph and then i floored it. My car didnt even kick down to first (I hate that) and i was catching him fast.
I'm willing to bet you'll beat him though. Your car is newer and has less chance of not being in good tune. I dont think he'd win if his car was mint condition either. Mine was slow stock. Its just now to the point where im happy with its performance.

I was driving our 1989 IROC 350 (all stock) and i ran my wife in the 2001 GTP (all stock) from about 30mph. The GTP would pull me. From a stop, the iroc may be able to get a better launch - but the gtp would probably still win in a 1/4.
Your mileage may vary, just funny seeing a post where both cars were like ours.

I had a 1997 GTP. If both were brand new and the GTA had the 3.23 rear, the GTA should beat it. Not by much though. The L98 still puts down over 30wtq more than the L67 and more 10-15 more whp. 195whp is generally where a GTP is at buuuut, the L67 has a better topend. Redline is 5700, whereas we all know how shallow of a redline the TPIs have. IT will be a drivers race. Now with a pulley and proper tuning, the GTP will start to win more often.
Side note, I raced my dad's SSEi bonny, same motor but in a slightly heavier (150lbs or so) car with a less aggressive pcm than the GTP, and it wasn't even close. My LB9 TA walked away. Both from a roll and a dig. I was shocked as I was sure the SSEi would take my car.
Just race and find out. You are putting in Premium octane right? IF you want, you can make your own fenderwell intake for less than $60. PM me if interested. I have a lot of GTP tuning under my belt.
