2000 Impala 3.4 L
I'm currently driving one, and being as young as I am, I find it to be a very quick car! Of course I haven't driven many cars in my lifetime... But compared to other Third-gens of other years, what models/years is this car faster than?
#2
maybe the 305 TBI cars... aka the L03 and LG4 motors i believe.
my dad has an 03 impala with the 3.8...200 hp and its a dog to me down low. gearing is way too tall but its faster than late 70's vettes i found out! LOL it gets up kinda well above 60mph tho.
the 3.4 i dont know much about but if its anywhere less than 200hp, then the car will be kinda slow. i would think the 305 TBI cars have about the same power to weight.

It's 180...
Engine choices include a base 180-horsepower 3.4-litre V6, while the up-level LS has the 3.8-litre V6 (200 hp). Both are older pushrod engines in GM's lineup, but they do the job. The engine of choice for the smoothest driveability is the 3.8-litre. The ride and handling suspension that comes with the larger engine also makes for better road manners.
Would an LG4 be close competition to it? The LG4 has the torque...

An LO3 and LG4 "should" beat one. The 3.8 SC cars however are much faster and will beat a stock LO3/LG4. It is a heavy car and that 3.4L is lame.

EDIT: They were all in fun. Please don't give me the street racing talk. I have enough common sence to know when NOT to race. No lecture, please. I'm not a wreckless driver, nor do I pretend to be.

haha well if you think your impala is fast then definately get behind the wheel of a mild L98 thirdgen. hahah opens your eyes
i think the 3.8 vs L03's would be closer. as far as road manners, i think the impala could use 1inch lowering with alot stiffer springs to be a nice road car... it just doesnt feel all that great. we got the Ls1 with some good options and i just not impressed with handling. too much roll

I hope when I get my third-gen, it throws me back into my seat to the point where I can't breathe

Won't throw you back quite that hard stock, but get yourself some good tires and slip the clutch at about 3000... oh yeah it'll set you in your seat

the impala is nice.. handling is better than our 93 spirit, and our 94 grand am. but its not as good as the 06 mazda 3, or my iroc-z LOL
if you do get a thirdgen get a Z28 or Irocz or GTA trans am with the good suspension. it will be quick feeling but also handle a ton better. i remember my first drives in my L98.. and it scared me. its still the fastest car i ever drove

My dad is a police officer and he drives an impala for the police car and they are supercharged and have a bigger air filter (the police ones that is) and are fast as heck. It would kill my firebird. but once i get my lt1.........

Hmm... I must be missing something. Impalas seem like they would handle like **** compared to a similarly built thirdgen. They sit way higher, weigh a lot more and have an overall longer body than a thirdgen.
I don't really know anything about Impalas or how their suspension works, though... so I very well might be wrong.

the brakes on impalas are nice tho.. big rotors on them
anyway.. i seen a police impala for sale... 2001 i believe it was.. this was back in 2002-2003 or so. had 180K miles on it...wanted 9 grand for it. i dont believe it was supercharged.
i have seen a pittsburgh police crown vic step on it and take off up the hill and they do move out pretty well

Are police cars faster than they've ever been now?

No you are right. Any 3rd gen without a worn out suspeion will out do anything an impala can do on the track. I have a fully suspension 3rd gen and drove an SC 3.8 Impy for years. There is no comparison people. lets not get confused with modern suspension norms and proper suspension set-ups.
Police cars be it b-bodies and or crown vics have subtle improvements but are by no means rockets and or corner carvers. They have V8's and tons of other "make last longer" parts added to them (radiators, injectors, sway bars, springs, tires etc).

I drove a 2003 Impalla 3.8 from 16 to 19 years old. I bought the 91 RS (LO3) at 19. The camaro out handles the Impalla. I take exits a lot faster with the maro than the palla. HOWEVER, I think the Impalla is faster. I would still take the camaro hands down. It is a lot more fun to drive, and even tho it would lose in a race, it just feels like a faster car. (Not to mention that girls check out the camaro, not the impalla ).

There is an LG4 car I want, it has the catalytic converter removed, and has an edelbrock intake. I figure if I add Hedman headers and Y-pipe, and a flowmaster muffler, I should have a car faster than my Impala.
I love the Impala for what it is, great reliable car, not to mention it's great on gas for a full sized car. It's not a performance car, but it can still beat any Honda

Impalla 3.8 is 200hp and 225 ft/lb torque. I'd say the full exhaust you mention will make the LG4 much quicker than the 3.4 impalla .

Not that the 3.4 is a horrible motor, but if you think that thing is fast, you have something comming for ya. You must drive a peanut cammed car.

These are the specs for the GS automatic sedan. The one we have is a Coupe!
On a deserted 3 lane stretch of highway the needle has touched near 145 MPH(really didn't have any time to see for sure)!
