383 firebird vs 496 chevyII

OK heres the situation. Friday October 7th is the last street drags for my track and I talked to a guy with a 496 chevyII about setting up a race if he has time.He is one of the main players at our street drags and can't always get all the races done.My car is an all steel full interior stock suspensioned 10.5:1 383 84 firedbird with a medium solid roller and ported brodix track 1's running a turbo 350 with 3.73's outback on a 26x9 slick. His car (from what he's told me) is a full interior 66 chevyII on a gbody frame with ladderbars. He is all steel except fiberglass hood with a mild 10:1 496 with a small solid roller and ported factory heads.Oval port I think.I think he has a th400 trans and a ford 9" with 3.70 gears and what look like 28x10.5 slicks. He does run a 350 shot to put the car on its back bumper, but will be running me on all motor.I do know approximately what he runs on motor so it will be closer than what it sounds, but what do you guys think. Can I take him, will he get me by a length or 2, or will he flat out destroy me?I'll post the results next weekend.

Even though you have a pretty stout car there, a 496 incher in a 66 nova is gonna be hard to keep up with, even if the motors fairly mild, he's making tons of torque and that's a very light car. Although oval port heads on a motor of that size has gotta be holding it back some.

Don't take it wrong but I think he's gonna beat ya by a few lengths, although if I knew what you run I may reconsider....

Good Luck anyway!

I have no doubt your car is QUICK with that torquey 383 in it. You probably win almost all street races that you encounter. However, you've got to understand what you're up against. That big block will be tough!

I've got a 465 cubic inch Pontiac in my '68 Firebird and even with highway gears, it's a deep 13-second car, uncorrected at high altitude. The torque is just phenomenal. You bury the throttle and the scenery to the sides flies by at almost a scary speed. I accelerate so hard in that car.

So you'll have fun, but don't be disappointed if he out-pulls you.
Good luck though. Please report back and tell us how it went.

Yeah I really don't expect to win,but I'm hoping to put up a good fight and not loose by more than a length or 2.Last time I did get a rematch against a 468 66 Malibu that I lost to earlier in the year because of a broken distributor gear and took him pretty convincingly.

If I had a 200 shot and he went all motor I'd smoke him bad.

Well the race didn't happen with the chevyII. The turn out for the event was crazy and my car had starting problems so I only made one pass. It was against a head and cammed 5.0.The track was cold and I spun off the line and shifted early on the 1-2 shift.I still smoked him by several carlengths. It was a decently quick 5.0 as he came up after the race and told me he had run a 12.4.Even tho my pass could have been better I still managed an 11.40 @ 120.6 MPH

He took the chevyII body and put it on a Gbody chassis. It most definelty has headers and without a doubt flyies.lol.From what he's told me on the motor he is only1 or 2 tenths faster than what I run.I was hoping to steal the hit and maybe hold him off until the end.I could go to GLD this Saturday and try it again, but it will most likely be even crazier than WIR was and its alot farther to drive if I break.I still have my 26 spline stock rear and would hate to see what a 2+ hr tow truck ride would be.
