84 firebird vs. my new 86 mustang gt vs. 86Z28
Woah....So I was looking for a new ride as a daily driver....Thought about a '92z28/l98 or '94-96lt1....But I saw an add in the recycler for a 1986 mustang gt.
Dude wanted $850 for it. The add said looks ugly, runs great. I thought what the heck i'll check it out. So my buddies and I drove 45miles up to carson, ca to check it out. When I got there the guy selling it was building an engine in his sweet garage....Ok so I look at the car, sure enough it's kinda ugly, most noticable is the totally shot interior, then some minor body damage. So he gives me the keys and gets in the passenger side. I start it up and it sounds GREAT! I asked what kinda exhaust was on it....Headers to true duals. I slip out the clutch and start moving down the road. I punched it and got some crazy wheel spin, so I quickly shifted into second gear, and hit WOT. More wheel spin! holy ****! this thing is brutal!
Long story short, I bought it for $680! It also has a limited slip 8.8" 3.15 rear, 70mm bbk throttle body, trick flow intake manifold and CAI, also it's a WC T5. ~240hp/310lb/ft.
So now my buddies that I turned on to third-gens see:
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=273354
are making fun of my ugly old car. But from a dig, or a roll, my ugly gt beats my bro's Z28, and firebird. It also feels faster than my '92 rs.
I would post pics, but it's not really thirdgen related.
I don't really like the overall look of the body style...but it sure makes a geat sleeper! So that's my new project. But I'll still be working on my Camaro and chillin on this site, I really enjoy the people here-so opinionated
So let's hear it!

Car: Mustang
Engine: Bolt Ons
Transmission: Stock
Axle/Gears: 3.73
Sounds like a decent find. But the real downfall of the 86s were the E6 heads. Dump those for a nice set of aftermarket ones or at the least a set of E7s and the car will wake up nicely. Also never heard of 3.15 gears, but a set of 3.73s or 4.10s would do nice!

Yeah I'll keep a hood on it
Interior needs alot of work.
Should be a fun project.

Yeah, he changed out the mfflers, but I assumed headers were aftermarket. Then I found out they had headers from the factory, starting in 86?.
Still sounds mean though. Lotsa power up in the higher rpm range, and still massive lo-end grunt. Definatly not the beautiful lines of a thirdgen though. heh heh now I have 2 white cars though!

It's been raining for the last few days, and the car is outside with a tarp over it. (Convertable top is broken) When it stops raining I'll snap some pics and put 'em on a website and post the link.

I know, I'm sad. The garage was converted to a room/office, so the cars live in the driveway.

Well it's a LG4, 165hp/250tq. VS. My stang with ~240hp/310tq. Plus the stang is a few hundred lbs lighter. Both are 5-speed though. I was pulling him pretty good.

My stang pulls harder out of a dig than the z28, so I got the jump on him there, and keeps making power up untill ~6600rpm...I'm new to the Mustang and 302 motor myself. I was asking guys on mustang forums what my hp/tq should be at with the mods I have. That's just what they told me
"My stock 86 will destroy the tires in 1st and 2nd gear with the stock 2.73's still in it."
I checked the vin # on the stang and found out it does have 2.73's also
But it it also eats the tires in 1st and 2nd.
I read about the handicap of the e6 heads and how they were only used on 1986 models. It sure would be nice if the previous owner swapped them out, saving me the trouble.

6600 RPM???
If the 86 ECU is anything like the newer cars, your fuel is cut at 6250... That car shouldnt be pulling any harder past 5000 RPM tops, unless it has a cam and intake and head work.
This sounds like the tach in your car is plagued like all Mustang tachs. It says 6600, but your nowhere near that!

hmmmmm.....I don't know, but it has nice power all through the rpm range. Redline starts at 6000rpm. I've seen it go up past that when I've been driving it. I'm concentrating more on driving (brake booster is almost gone, you have to press the pedal all the way to the floor to get it to slow down. The clutch engages....odd...but no slip, plus this is my first manual car. Shifting a motorcycle is easier to me) but i've managed some quick glances at the tach. Idle is 800rpm, and it does sound a bit lumpy...In a good way though. Cam swap maybe? But anyway, unlike my camaro the power dosn't just drop right off at 5000rpm.....

Heh the same thing happened to me. I was looking for a good daily driver and this guy at work told me he had an 85 gt. I said what the hell, drove it, it was wicked fast and told the guy I would give him what he was asking for it, he didnt really want to sell it. I like having both since my camaro is so damn good looking.

The interior needs alot of work, but I just finished the full tune-up (oil/filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cleaned air filter, coolent flush, new thermo, blah blah blah)
And this puppy performs! While it was jacked up I noticed It had some KYB struts, not sure of what model. eh it hits corners pretty good![Big Grin](https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Edit: Today I was working on it, and some dude came over and said he had a '65 stang with a v6. He wanted to drop the motor in his '65. He offered me $1600 for the car lol I told him I just got it and wanted to keep it. He gave my his # and told him to call him if I changed my mind...

That interior is ragged as a monkey in barbed wire
Buy some new seats
Rip out any carpeting left
Clean up the dash and panels
and be done with it
Unless you have the cash to fully outfit it
New carpet and such
