'70'71 Javelin vs. '91 GTA 305tpi?????
Here it is guys, my friend has a '70-'71 javelin with a 360. Not sure on any mods, but if it was stock, who would win?
I have a '91 gta with a 305tpi. Headers with flowmaster muffler,no cats, comp cam, 3:42 gears, ported plenum, msd 8.5 wires, trans-go shift kit and afpr.
Best time on my g-tech comp is 14.3.
WHO WOULD WIN?

If you are runing mid to low 14's I would think you could beat him if he is completley bone stock. It wouldn't take much for that javelin to really scream tho.

There seems to be all sorts of conflicting information about what engines were available in the 70-71 Javelins depending on whether a base model, SST, or AMX. The 360s that were available ranged from 175 to 290 hp (not sure if those numbers are net or gross). Not terribly impressive, but these were also relatively light cars.
Anyway, the best answer I can give is "it depends".

Bit of advice, Don't bet against the Javelin. Even bone stock they will be quicker then the 305 GTA.

The AMC would. I have almost your combo man. My dad is a hugggge AMC nut. He has a 74 AMX and a 68 Javelin. Man they tear it up. Plus the 74 runs 11's!!! Beware of the AMC POWER.

Back in the day, I had a '74 Camaro with the 145 hp 350 that would lay a spanking on my friend's 360-powered '74 Javelin on a regular basis - it actually became boring after a while.
You need to do an apples-to-apples comparison - without knowing a little more about the particular 360 in this particular Javelin, it's all just meaningless speculation.

Never meant it like that. It is like any motor, if you build it right it will run great and fast.
I know because of all the AMC's my pops has had that they are a great setup waiting for some good parts.
AMX wise, well thats another story, been there done that. R4B intakes with factory numbers on the intakes, and so on.

Just a thought on this subject, would you keep a v-6 or a 350 v-8
3rd gen car for the next Thirty Years if you had a choice?????
Now if someone kept a 70-71 AMC Javelin for that time, do you think it would be a slow car????
My bet it would be a very fast old car.

Anyway, the OP was asking about a stock Javelin/360, hence my "devil's advocate" stance on the subject.

You'd take him. Best time for a stock Jav would have been about 14.8 or so. I put a 360 from a 74 car into my 79 Spirit GT, and would run 14.5. Little lighter car, but crappy gears.

I used to own, build, and race a 71 sst that I bought new in 71 when I returned from Viet Nam. This particular Jav. was a demonstrator that I bought for 4,090 bucks W/8,000mi on it.
The manual said to burn reg. gas, but after 13,000 more miles, I burned a couple of valves in the 360ci and after I removed the heads to replace them I found these huge intake and exaust valves to the tune of 2.02in and 1.68ex. Turns out I had a 70 model 360 W/10:1 comp. in my 71 Jav.!!! It came with 2:87:1 limited posi, wimpy Autolite carb, and some kind of fomoco dist.
I drove the hell out of that car for 89,000mi in two years! and
I changed everything on it but the heads, block and pistons. Even with the piece of crap Borg Warner cast iron auto tranny, I beat the hell out of everything! at least once or twice!
I ended up buying a 68 AMX W/343ci that W/headders and a holley change ran as good as the Jav! The curb wt. of the Jav. was 3310 and the Amx was 3020. The biggest difference in the 360ci engines was the dog leg exaust ports on the heads. The HP. rating for the 4 barrel 70 was 280 net. not gross. Before I changed the rear gears to 3:54's It would do 100mph in second gear and I passed up 140mph several times after I changed the cam W/6,000 rpm Crower Hyd. The Doug Thorley comp. tuned headders made the biggest diff. of anything I did to the engine
In 71 the 360's comp. ratio dropped to 8:5:1 and the hp. sucked
Even the 401ci couldn't keep up with my 360. Anything you want to know about the 360, I can tell you!
