89 GTA stock vs (what else) a modded civic: opinions wanted

I really don't want to race a darn civic, but the talk is getting old.
A friends friend has an early 90's civic with the following mods:
civic type r engine swap, custom cold air intake, headers, full 3in catback exhaust, pulleys, and modified type r ecu.

I have a stock 89 GTA L98. Only mods are a K&N, aftermarket exhaust, and high flow cats.

He said the civic should run 13's (the guys never gone to the track, just doing their own "calculations"). If it does, I'm obviously dead in the water. More than likely even with the subtle mods I want to do (Headers, CAI).

Should I bother waiting until I get the headers and CAI? Or am I screwed either way?

Just wanted opinions.
Thanks.

My guess is hes running mid to low 14's , your probably running mid to high 14's, what gear do you have in your rear?If you get headers ,and a CAI it would be a good race.So definetly get the headers and CAI, and it will be close.

Thanks for the reply man.
I have the 3.27's. I guess I'll wait it out and get the headers and make the CAI. The guy said anytime anywhere so the race is really just waiting on me.

You know another thing I thought about is, you said your making your CAI, I would do a search if I were you on how to make a custom ram air setup , I have heard of alot of guys do that on there tpi cars and they are claiming .2 to .3 seconds off there ets, so I think it would be worth while to look into that. Also 3.27 is a decent gear ratio so with the headers and full exhuast and maybe that custom ram air you could probably break a good 14.0 . My brother is breaking a 14.5 with that exact setup only he has a 305 tpi. I will ask him how he made his ram air setup and get back to you.

Well I just remembered that trans ams and camaros had different intake setups, you have the intake that goes to the side, while camaros have the intake assembly that bolts in in front of the radiator ,is that right?well this is the setup my brother ran for his custom intake http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=38634
although he didnt actually buy this one of his friends made the exact same thing for him for like $12, although now I dont think you can run it because you have a GTA , oh well thought I would post it just in case there is some way you can make it work.

Thanks but yea, they run differently. That is acool setup.
Now, is there any performance difference with either? Why would pontiac decide to do it one way, and Chevrolet do it another?

the civic is around a 14.5-8 id say you got him convincinglly just get a good launch, oh and the reason that type r engines rev to 8 grand is cause they make no power till 6 grand so just cause it revs high doesnt mean it making power through out the whole powerband it only makes "power" for the last 2 grand

Headers, a Ram Air intake (they work great, seen one before ), and a cam and/or a intake manifold would probably be enough to take him. Or have your TPI ported. A heads/cam/intake package would be GREAT. But if I were you, I would do the headers and CAI or the Ram air, and put a little 50 shot on there for just in case .

I hope that WRX you raced was just a stock WRX, My friend has a WRX STI, It runs consistant 13.2s and will run 130 mph through traffic...Kinda scary, I know first hand...

I'll tell you what, I was at the strip this weekend and I saw an L98 formula firebird smoke a 00 toyota celica gts with intake and exhaust. All the fastest non-turbo civics and euros and other "junk" were running at least half a second slower than the stock L98. Even the VTEC's and VVTLi's. Bottom line is to not loose faith in american muscle and as long as he is not hiding a turbo or like 10-15 grand in the motor, I'm sure he's no threat.

The civic has an 8500 redline, and no turbo's or NOS.

might be some trouble if its a CRX...those things tend to weight less than 2000 lbs...

But most likely you've got it.

Yea he said it's somewhere around 2000lbs. He stripped the car of the interior to save weight as well.

Guess I'll opt to wait until I get the small mods I have planned before racing. Trying to sell one of my cars in order to speed up the process.

Hopefully this can happen before the snow hits.

Your car might be 3500 lbs but you are also pushing about 345+ ft-lbs of torque. Then again he might have 30+ stickers on his door worth 30 horsepower. You'll win

Sticker to HP ratio

I think you've done your math wrong...its a well known fact that while the 30 stickers will indeed make 30 horsepower. I believe you're forgeting that vinyl has a lower drag coefficent (sp) than paint and especially dirty paint, easily doubling or tripling his sticker output. So those stickers easily have a 100hp potential...nothing to scoff at. On the other hand...we know that's crap...save your money...get a 100shot and pound him into submission.

Hey, maybe somebody can enlighten me. I never heard of a Civic "Type R" engine. Is this a Japan only thing? I never heard of a Civic Type R in the states. Only the SI, which as far as I know are mid-high 15's at best when stock. So if he dropped that engine in his older lightened Civic with those few mods, is that really enough to drop his car into the low 14's?

Now, if this were an Integra Type R engine dropped into that Civic with those mods, than I can definitely see the GTA being in big trouble.

He said it was imported from Japan soo...

I'm also getting to hear "It beat up a heavily modded Chevelle" comments. I'm wondering why a heavily modded Chevelle is still stuck in the "13's."
