3.5 altimas are fast

i was on my way home around 1:30 last night, and doing about 65-70 on route 1. this altima goes past me in the left lane, and then after a minute slows down until i'm even with him. just as i pass i hear him (or somebody beep), and then all the sudden i see him coming up fast in the left, so when he's about even with me, i floored it. he walked away pretty steadily, and i shut down around 90.

now, i had no idea he wanted to race and everything, but damn that thing was fast.

just thought i'd share

Had a couple come through the shop one day on the way to the used car line. Got to drive one of them and I was very impressed.

Hmmmmm a 3.5 beating a 350 TPI?? Am I missing something???? Because if you are running a 14.1 like I am which is stock you should have beaten him

If he was running up on you there is a reason he pulled. He was doing probably 15+ mph more when you florred it. With that kind of lead and the fact your car had to downshift I think is why he pulled even after you floored it. From a dead dig or a side by side run you should have him IMO!

I have had the opportunity to race an Altima, 3.5 SE Stick, from a dead stop I took him off the line even with wheel spin and he stayed on my door up until about 95 MPH...they get my respect for being a huge family sedan...but hey, technology now adays is far superior to 15 years ago - AARON

Car: too many ...
The only reason he beat you on the top end is because the TPI intake is not made for top end power. They run low 14's stock, which is nice, but still no match against 5.7TPI torque in the 1/4. Top end is a different story with the TPI loosing.

I worked with a guy that had one of those , I never raced him or anything but he claimed it ran 14.7's in the quarter . Thats pretty awesome for a luxury car.You should have got him to stop at a light with you, then you would have shown his a$$.

i dunno if you have ever been in one, but they dont look very Lux to me... very low on the basics... that new Maxima looks but ugly but hauls... but then again they are heavy. Also the 350Z is nice looking, but it doesnt impress me much with there 1/4 times... they give a stock L98/LB9 5spd G92-LT1 drivers something to think about.

You can't let anything come flying by you and when it gets next to you then floor it, you'll pretty much get killed by anything, even a 6 cylinder mustang. I know this because it's happened to me when my car was stock about 4yrs ago. Getting the jump or starting at the same time is the only way to win on the street from a roll, especially when your car is only around 240hp and doesn't breathe past 4500rpms. You'll learn this very quickly if you street race once in a while and you want to win. Your car would win against this altima if you started racing at the same time, or if you punched it first when going the same speed. You gotta do everything right to beat a lot of new cars with your 11+yr old thirdgen. But back in the day these 350 f-bods were ones to be reckoned with, I know, my dad had a brand new 88 GTA, and he lost about 4 times the first 6 yrs he had it, until the newer f-bods and cadillacs came out.

I don't think it has much to do w/breathing as it does w/gearing. If you had a 5 speed to go w/the 350(even a stock 240hp one) you could have caught up w/the pesky nissan and beat him.
I have 4.10s w/a 5 speed and I can catch up to almost any **** or nippon offender, either in 5th or 4th.

i know i would've beaten him if we started at the same time. i was just saying it was faster than i thought, and i was impressed.

hopefully soon i'll have an lt1 (or maybe even an ls1!) with a six speed, so i won't have to worry about those pesky nissans...

now, before you hate on me for wanting a fourth gen, i really just want a little more power, with t tops and a six speed. i don't have the time, tools, or mechanical know-how to swap that stuff into my car myself, and i'd hate to pay somebody else to do it. so i think the fastest way to get what i want is a fourth gen. and hopefully somebody that does have the time, tools, and mechanical background will buy my car and take great care of it. the actual buying and selling part is a little sketch right now, but i'll probably have the fourth gen by the winter, and might be selling my car by spring.

that "pesky nissan" has 245hp / 246lb/ft and it probably weighs a couple hundred pounds less.

i thought the new ones had 285hp? and to the guy who said they would give lt1's something to think about, please. ive never had trouble RUNNING away from them at a stop or roll. and this was with only a CAI. havent raced with the longtubes/duals yet.
hell, i put 2 cars on one from dead stop to about 90 in my moms 03 GTP.

See link above. I've seen 2 at Capital Raceway recently - both ran 98mph. That's LT1 territory One even took out a Lightning...
