Me vs. cam/gear/converter/DR/exhuast/computer LS1.....

this guy i know has a nasty ls1 with a bunch of stuff done to it (see title), and tonight i finally got to run him... He runs 11.77@114 in race trim. He had a passenger (11.9), and didn't stall out of the whole (he pulls 1.6 60's on a full stall, 1.8ish from idle), so lets say in the form i raced him in, he was about 12.2s. Now onto the good stuff...

First race is from a stop. We both spin like crazy we're both sideways through second, and then i miss a gear, so scratch that race...

Second race, from a stop. I pull about a half car on him out of the whole. He come by me as i'm shifting to third, pulls about 2 carlengths by the time i shift into 4th, no more pulling once i'm in forth. I lose by 2~ carlengths...

Third race, from a 30 mph roll. We hit it and i pull a half a car, he hits third and pulls the same 2 carlengths on me again, once i hit fourth he doesn't pull anymore...

fourth race, from a 50 mph roll. I'm in the totally wrong gear. Only at about 2800 rpm in third. he hits it and pulls away, bout 3 carlengths...

Even though i lost, i'm beyond happy right now. Tonight made my entire last 4 months worthwhile. The best part of the whole deal was when we talked afterwards and he said how impressed he was with the car, and the fact that i put it together myself. Thats right folks, i got the seal of approval from an ls1 owner...

well thats my story for the evening... discuss.

trans brakes don't work well with 6 speeds

I am thinkin about a line lock though, dont know how useful it would be, but it's a thought....

Nice runs!

Its hard to hang with a camed LS1. Keep in mind that you definetly have an advantage over him when you race from a roll (manual vs auto)...but some tuning to your setup would probably be worth quite a bit. Hooking up is everything.

Haha, isnt that some ****! At a thirdgen meet down here before I went back to school, I few of us lined up to do a multi car burnout. Having a 5 speed I got it rolling and was just going to stand on the brakes whenever I was in line with the other guys. Yeah I just kept on rolling. The only way I could get the damn breaks to hold it at the track doing a burnout was to rev the **** out of it, even then the car still wanted to roll forward a little.

Anyway, nice run with the LS1, sounds similar to my encounter. Its great getting the nod of a approval from LS1 owners isnt it?!

well i bought my 9 bolt rear today. I should have the 3.73 gears and install kit for it by the end of next week. Then i'm gonna buy a set of DR's and go hunting for him... Hopefully his will still be running (he popping his heads off soon to have them ported.. then i'm trouble ). I should have the tuning more or less sorted as well while i get the rears swapped... It should be running in the form it will be all season by the end of this month... which gives me about 21 days to practice before Cecil County opens on the 21st Man i can't wait....

Keep tuning!! Have you tried to loose weight on the Camaro?

Fiberglass hood , Lighter rims, Remove carpet in rear, remove rear seats, ect.

Less weight = More speed.

things i've done in the way of wieght savings:

Ac in the trash
Power steering in the trash
Aluminum heads and intake
no carpet insulation
battery in the hatch (more of a distribution thing i guess)

thats about it, and thats about all i plan on doing this year. Last year the car was on jackstands more than it was on the road. I only put about 2000 miles on it last year. this year it's time to enjoy what i've built. After i get the rear sorted the only things i've got planned is 70/30 struts, 50/50 shocks, and V6 springs for the front...

I might upgrade to a Tubular k member next year, but thats no where in the near future...

4.11's, and your T-56, and you won't have to worry.

i was gonna go 4.11's, but i think its too much gear. i don't wanna have to shift into 5th, and i don't wanna be floating the valves through the traps....

hmmm i was just messing with the calculation thing on this site and it looks like i'd be going through the traps at 116.7 mph with a 26" tire at 6200 rpm (redline) with a 4.10 gear. Being that i'm expecting to trap about 113 mph this year i think i'm gonna be going with 4.10's after all....

zupman28: Just how bad are the brakes? I have the same XE 274 cam that will go in with my AFR 190s (as soon as I get my tax refund). I plan on putting a lot of miles on it, and don't want any real drivability problems. Is it something a resevoir can handle? Any problems with the interior air distribution - like defrost only at WOT?

Marc, normal driving wise the brakes feel absolutely normal. The only time i've had a problem is when i try to powerbrake the car. I've stopped a few times from a 130 roll and have had absolutely no problems. Driveability wise i have had ZERO problems with this cam so far, and several other board members are having the same experience with it...

As for defrost, i don't know, my heater core blew up about 3 months ago. I'm ordering one of those Mojove heaters out of Summit so i'll finally have some heat again....

BTW, sorry i missed your IM, i forgot to put up an away message when i left earlier....

I let that IM sit open for nearly an hour and finally got discouraged. I had a few other questions for you if you don't mind

How does it idle? I know you have a Holley and I plan on going the modified QJet route, but I'd like to know RPM and idle quality. Also, what is the RPM range like? Is it the 1800-6000 advertised. I plan on a head/intake/exhaust combo that should handle that cam and 1.6s quite well.

Thanks

it idles at about 900 rpm with a slightly noticable lope, but nowhere near the point where you'd have to worry about stalling in traffic or anything. it's a very well mannered cam.

As for the power band, it makes incredible power all the way up to 6000 rpm, at which point for some reason it actually starts pulling harder. It almost feels as though i'm hitting a vtech or somethin, its wierd. if you got the bottom end to handle it, it'll pull strong right up to 6500 rpm. (i'm shifting at 6300, stock bottom end, and i'm scared about that).

As for the carb, if you know what your doing with the qjet it should be fine. My problem was no one sold any parts for them locally, and no one could figure out why i got a part throttle bog. Plus the fact that the choke was messed up, and the thing is ugly as sin My demon looks so much nicer sitting up top, not to mention my part throttle bog is gone....

900RPM? That's a bit high. I was hoping for 750-800 tops in gear, and a nice chop to the idle. Maybe it's in the carb though. I plan on having JET build a QJet to MY MOTOR. Not some out of the box deal.

Pulls harder after 6000? I have a hard time keeping it from overrevving now. It spins like crazy through first and I sometimes have to short shift first to prevent valve float. I'm running a factory 010 4 bolt block with a factory steel crank, reconditioned rods and no idea what pistons. I did not plan on shifting past 6000, except for the few times I take it to the track.

Come early spring when I have this thing all done I'll have to stop by Delaware, or we could meet up at the Nationals... I appreciate the info!

gotta remember though 900 rpms is with a manual. in gear it would idle right around 7-800 with no problems. On cold start it idles at 600 and never stalls, so i doubt you'd have a problem.

I'm using the exact same bottom end as you too. 010 4 bolt block stock crank, stock rods, and stock hardware. Its got hyper flat top pistons with 4 valve reliefs.

I didn't wanna shift mine that high either but it just really likes going up there owell, if it does grenade itself at least i've got a backup 350 sitting on a stand in the garage... thats a comforting feeling right there...

You oughta swing by and see the DE crowd. granted theres not a lot of exciting thirdgens, but there are a few.... Hooters cruise ins start back up here soon....
