Can I beat my friends '97 LT1 Firebird

I'm putting a 400 small block with an edelbrock power package and hedman Headers in my 1985 Trans Am. I'm sick of my buddy with his LT1 formula kickin my ***. I was wondering if this set up should show him what the *** end of my car looks like for a change?

if you have gears and posi you should hold up to him. that power package may be a bit tame for a 400, and there are way better heads out there than edelbrocks. a holley wild street package is right around 1300 bucks and makes 425 horsepower on a small block 350 (made 460 according to hot rod magazine but i think that is a crock). with a slightly bigger cam and the systemax kit you will own him.

I have a low-compression 400 with a mild cam, 882 (crappy smog) heads, heddman headers, single 3" catless exhaust with a single-out Flowmaster and a Weiand Stealth intake, all pushing through a 700-R4 and 2.73 pegleg. Stock LT1's are no problem froma roll. I haven't had the pleasure of a dead-stop run with an LT1, but since I have a pegleg and highway gears, the launch would suck. You shouldn't have much trouble if he's stock.

It really depends on the specific combo. I have seen 400's that couldnt be producing more than 200hp, and I've seen some making well over 500hp.

Gear/trans/cam/intake/heads/converter/carb/etc. all need to work well together.

However, It would be safe to say that even a tossed together, low budget 400 would be able to run a mid 13 and beat a mild LT1 Fbody.

No offence to anyone here. But these kind of questions are getting tired. You could have way more HP then the LT1 but can't drive worth beans and vise versa. It isn't always the car that loses the race, infact it is almost alway the driver that loses. With the set up mentioned..if he has nothing done to his car you may keep up. Beat him? .... not sure about that one.
This was in no way to be a flame or anything towards anyone. It's just that I see these threads...can I beat this guy, and will this civic beat me... Who know's...go race him and find out. I've never seen your car, never mind his car. Maybe neither of you can drive. It is to hard to say who will win and, in my opinion..which is just a opinion and I have a right to voice it. These types of post just waste space on the site itself. Sorry! Like I said no offence to anyone.

very true,

But isnt that kinda what threoretical (bench) racing is all about? These threads are more on topic than 90% of the others...still I do agree, a little tired.

You have to admit that it is better than asking if there metro could take on a lighenfelter vette. I am just amazed at how little people know about their own cars capabilty and what other cars are capable of. I am no car expert but I am able to estimate what my car is able to do and what it can and cant beat. Could be because I read quite a few different car boards, but it is not that hard to know what your car is capable of.

i always just assume that drivers are somewhat equal in skill. your point is well taken, and 400's are tough to launch.

I have always had trouble with my TA. I have almost never gotten a chance to see how it really behaves. I have it in the shop right now to fix my Idle problems. Hopefully I will get to play with it soon.
