Current Monte Carlo generation... something to worry about?
I was heading up the highway the other day (literally up hill) and the lane splits into two as you leave town... I've had the best luck luring a racer or ***** or two on this stretch, so I often cruise this strip after work and all the races I get here are from a roll of 30 MPH...
Anyhow, I was heading up this strip and I was being tailed by an unknown set of headlights. I figured this guy really wants to get past me and he'll probably try his damndest to pass me. I pulled into the right lane in usual fasion, mind you on a 9% grade and in 3rd gear @ 30 MPH... being my own cocky self I saw a surge of acceleration from the other car and I punched it... racing up to 45 I saw a set of headlights quickly start to go by the driver's side window and I shift to 4th and they slow down to a crawl... we got to about 70 with him still about 4 feet from the front of my car and I shifted to 5th and just stopped accelerating (after all it is a 40 zone) at which point I saw a newer monte carlo blast past me and then stop accelerating as I had... I know I should have dropped to second initially, but again I am a bit cocky in estimating my opponents... I mean the last race was a with a sundance duster LOL.
Well, that's my story and I'm wondering if this should have been less of a challenge or is their (3.4 or 3.8?) V6 supposed to pose a threat?
Ahh well he deserved a thumbs up, but it was snowing out and damn near freezing...

yea it is, R I C E R :nono:
BTW anyone heard of the RWD V8 Monte carlo coming in 2005?
I heard that somewhere, but have heard nothing else
everyone is talking of the GTO but not the monte
I think the #3 SS Monte carlo was good for high 14s, don't quote me on that, and I don't know the difference in that and a normal SS other than badges and a ton of $$$

pfft those things although a nice car,are NOTHING to be worried about in their current state of tune.they are WHALES,they have a whopping 205 hp,and have the notoriously poor geared 4t60-E i believe.its a good motor,in the camaro v6,but not in a front wheel driver that weighs 3700 pounds with crap gearing.i think they run like 16.4 or something.this one was either modded in some way or it might have been the new SS that finally has the GTp motor.dunno you shoulda smoked it pretty good unless youre in a sorry state of tune.

Here are the numbers of a Road test of a Monte Carlo SS tested in Road & Track back in September.
0-60: 8.6
1/4: 16.6 @ 84
BHP:200 bhp @ 5200rpm 225 ft-lbs @ 4000 rpm
I don't know about you but that is pretty sad for a new car. I don't think the new Monte Carlos deserves an SS badge.

there are some things that NEED to be on a monte carlo ss before it gets the badge.here they are IMHO:
-Small block atleast 350(screw the 80's 305)
-Rear drive with atleast 3.42's
-4 speed auto or PLEASE a 5 speed stick
-FULL frame
-5 passenger 2 front buckets 1 rear bench
-T-TOPS!!
ok well i think that about sums that up.anyone else with to add??

I'll add this
It should be faster than 16.6s in the 1/4 mile. That is almost close to what a 2.8l F-body would get with less horsepower.

The new Monte Carlos are not coming with the GTP motor to my knowledge. They only weigh about 3400, the new SS at least. They are nothing to worry about.
GM has a very bad history of taking a classic car that were so easy to customize and soup up, and then bring them back as nothing more than an underpowered FWD family land yacht. I.E. the Impala and the Monte Carlo.
My greatest fear is that they will bring back the F-Bodies as horribly underpowered sub-compact cars, or a full size family yacht.

Well, as I said I did start in 3rd where I should have started in 2nd, my car is spitting out an alarming amount of oil and my rear end is kinda broken right now (broke some frame back there)LOL... I think my car would run a 15.8-16.0 in it's current state... I am getting it fixed this weekend though... just need to replace the oil pan gasket and the valve cover gasket (passenger side ugh! )

If the SS Monte is that slow, I wonder how slow the normal versions are, or was the SS badge just an appearance option?

I heard through the grapevine that in a year or so that the monte ss' will have the LS1 tucked in there and still FWD. Its not impossible. I saw a Caddy with one of those northstar V-8's the other day at the carage. Without all the beauty covers it looks just like an LS1....mounted sideways. Should be RWD to keep the monte heritage up IMO.
