00 Grand Am GT VS 97 Prelude SH

175hp 3400 V6/auto VS 2.2 DOHC V-Tec 16 valve 5 spd

My gf has the GT and a classmate hads the Honda.
I drove the Prelude to day and was pretty impressed, absolutley no torque though...but wait until 5500rpm when the V-Tech gets in, feels like a rev limiter but opposite. the Grand Am, being an auto should beat it off the line.

What's your take?

The prelude will murder that GAGT unless it has a monkey driving it..

well first of all if it is a GT,then its 205hp i believe.if its the specs you stated, its an SE,which has the weaker version of the 3400.should be a good race, depending on how fast you go up to.off the line i think you will have them.let us know.

My money is the Prelude. About 200 hp with a manual, will kill a Grand Am GT.

Interesting replies, all doubting the Grand Am.
I'll set up race and let you know.

FYI I've raced an SVT Contour and won

Oh and I know the specs on the Grand AM GT...175 hp (and a 3.29) as perviously stated. SE's are 170 and have a 3.05 ratio

The GAGT assuming it's 2 door weighs about 125 lbs more than the prelude, but has an advantage of about 50ft lbs of torque.. The Prelude will have better gearing in the long run and after 20 mph will have it's way with the GAGT no matter which way you look at it.. Race from a roll would be embarassing.. From a stop could be a little closer.. Prelude still wins hands down..

ok well i registered on www.gaownersclub.com.its the grandam equiv. to our forum.im gonna have to say that the Lude will own.ive seen nothing but 16.0-16.4's outta the 3.4's.damn i thought that they were better than that.must be crap a*s gearing or something.i would think they would be atleast 15.8.oh well.i guess with some mods they can get there fairly easily.Gm has to shape the F*CK up and start puttin manuals in their damn cars.i would buy one of them GT's in a heartbeat if they came with a nice smooth 5 speed.its just total !!!

Definately not pushin near 200 without a few mods, my friend has one, its around 175hp and like 160 torque. I've raced him in my daytona, which is only around 145hp and 175 torque and its usually pretty close because he's not the greatest driver...

Well, we raced today. They say it takes a big man to admit he's wrong...I didn't really think I'd win but it was not as close as I thought either.

He got a good lauch and I slighty edged himn out there but then he pulled away.

At 100km/h (thats 60mph) he had about 1.5 cars
but by 140km/h (85mph) the Prelude increased that
distance to around 5 car lengths (hard to tell)

Now the GAGT had 3/4 tank and a passenger (200lbs)
and the Prelude had no passsnger.

But...he still woulda won.
However up to 100 it was pretty damn close.

Just thoughtI'd mention some Car and Driver stats

Prelude--I think did 0-60 in 7.2
GAGT----- 7.7

1/4 mile 15.1-15.4 Prelude
16.0 GAGT

But I've personally beat the 16.0 at the track.
I got a 16.3...AT 3500ft elevation.
So a high 15 is doable at a lower altitude.

well youre a good man for posting.losing to one of those isnt terrible.especially since you were in GAGT.if only GM would wise up and put a friggin manual in that damn car,it woulda been alot closer.but nope, stupid GM keeps on chugging along pleasing the tree huggers by producing slow *** front drive sedans.
oh well.ill never own one.**** ill buy a nice honda V6 stick before i buy a GM V6auto anything.fun and reliable.

People keep talking about reliable Hondas. That sounds like an oxymoron to me. I have NEVER seen a good Honda. Every older Honda I have seen had the rear end painted black from the putrid exhaust. Blue smoke, black smoke, white smoke- all the colours of the rainbow pour from the back of these little crapboxes around lower middle Tenn. I've seen Hondas with wings with black stains on them, prooving that the tart put the wing on when the car was already spewing out every kind of fluid the motor uses.

So they can handle alot of miles? Maybe being driven by a 90 year old who keeps it below 50.

You want a RELIABLE Japanese import? Nissan/Datsun...Toyota...Subaru...some Mazdas.

TAgal91- we raced on 16ave NW (westbound) at the lights by C.O.P.---that way we only went up to 140KM in a 100 zone (or maybe it's 090?)

My dads had Hondas the last 11 years and has NEVER had a problem--EVER. He put 220,000 kms on his 91.

Unlike the Grand Am--which has had it's intake manifold gasket replaced twince in a year, faulty brake rotors ect. Nothing majoe but still a hassle to take it in.

For a car to last it all really comes down to how wellit was maintained.
