Got to run a 66' GTO....

Yesterday I got to run a 66' GTO 350 3 times. He sounded good, he passed by, we were on a 2 lane road, and when I got up next to him, he tried to get on it and I let her loose and took him for a walk. At the next stop sign he pulled up and smiled said " Nice...." I said "Whatcha got in it..." "350." Then we went from a dead stop, I walked him good. Then he tried to get me from behind... you know get within about 1 car and then try to launch to get the head start... well, I downshifted and walked him again. He was cool, in his 40's and said " Man I need a new motor!"

It's cool to get to run something classic, this car was sweet, black with some cragars on it, very fun run. I've never got to run something that old before.

The best part was when he asked my what kind of motor I had and I got to say "Just a 305."

It's always nice to race an older guy. They seem to be better sports than a young punk.

Car: 1991 Formula
Engine: 350 firebreathing inches of Small Block Chevrolet
Transmission: A 700R4 that has trouble handling the formentioned 350.
OK I have to blow some holes in this thread. First off I'm not sure why anyone would put a chev 350 in a Pontiac GTO, that would be stupid and if it was a Pontiac 350 whoo whoo, those where pretty ****ty engines. But you did beat him so good job. I also agree with the 389 comment, you would lose (you would get smoked if it was a stock three-duece set-up)
Now on to the 396 SS Chevelle against the 428 Cobra jet Mustang. Stock for stock the Mustang would hand the Chevelle it's *** on a stick. The 428 Cobra jet cars would beat up on Corvette's back in the day. However I doubt the Chevelle was stock and if you have something as rare as a the 428 Cobra Jet Mustang I doubt you would mod it (or even drive it for that matter).

Later, Garrett

yeah it was pontiac

Ok so what if it was a pontiac 350, I don't care, the point wasn't that I was going to win cause I knew I was from the get go because of the way his car sounded. It was just nice to play with a true car from the muscle car era. 389's are that quick eh.......

1984 Z- 28: L-69 bored to 310c.i. w/ 4k mi., 204/214 420/442 cam, edelbrock performer intake and 600 cfm carb, Holley Red fuel pump and a 3 port regulator, Holley Powershot filter ( open element), Edelbrock headers, gutted cat, 2.5 inches to a 2 chamber Flowmaster, Centerforce clutch on the T-5 and Energy suspension: Motor mounts, trans mount, and torque arm bushing
Brand new 255's out back with 3.73's

Soon to come: some built heads after my 1 year 10k warranty is up. (probably Vortec's)

Sorry i didn't post my mods, I know 389's are fast but I really don't think one would blow me outta the water that bad.

Oh yeah I strongly agree with the statement on Cobra jet Mustangs. They are bad to the bone. Traction is a real prob tho. A friend of mine has a built 429 Cobra Jet with a 4 speed in it' street driven ( hardly ever). It is awesome, sounds like a jet or somethin'.

I completely agree... I love running with the older cars, kinda intimidating actually. To know you are running with the machines that started this whole street racing thing. And you never know with those older cars, some of them are stock, or restored to stock, and some are just completely radical.

A GTO with a poncho 350 is nothing amazing, but I'll bet it was a fun race.

I love picking on old muscle. The guys look under the hood of my car and are like

"Watcha got 'n there, a vee six er somethin?"

The best race (most fun) I've had in a long time was a grudge match against a '66 olds 442 with a built 455 and 4 speed. The race ended with him hanging his head and blaming the carb. We have a rematch next year.

:hail: old muscle
:hail: new muscle

My next car will probably be a 79-72 nova.

Really

I own a 1968 Chevelle SS 396. Well it has a pink slip to a 427 Ford. I t also beat a 406 Third Gen Camaro this past summer and taken the leader of my local Corvette club.

LOL...Now thats funny!!! I know this is an old post, but there is no way a boat-anchor 428 Mustang will run anywhere close to a big block Chevelle or a Vette. Unless the Chevelle has a 396/325 it may have a slight prayer. The Mustangs were dogs. Mid-high 14-sec cars. A 396/375 Chevelle would kill it. I dont even want to get started on the Vettes.

i wanna know how u know it was a cobra jet was it the badges. or was it just a fastback witha 302 or 351w or c

and a 429 cobrajet will beat a ls5 and or 6 chevelle. not only is the ford lighter it has almost the same amount of trq and more hp than the chevelle.

350's are the cheapest bang for your buck, try building a 396 or 454 for dirt cheap and get good performance

The poncho was a 400 pontiac engine. All pontiac engines ended up being called that on the street, and even some stupid TGO members call thier firebirds ponchos.

I've never been one for lame nicknames (i.e. poncho). I'm just saying that there was/is a 350 pontiac.

I could be wrong but I thought the Cobarjet was a 428 and the Boss was the 429

Me either. There was most definately a 350 pontiac, anyone that doubts that is an idiot. Buick had one and so did olds. Kinda like the 455.

There was a CJ 429, a SCJ 429, and a Boss 429.

The Boss 429 was basically a SCJ 429 with Hemi heads.

They kicked *** in NASCAR, but they were dogs on the street, just like the Boss 302. The 428 was ok, but nothing impressive, especially compared to a Chevy 396 or 427... and they would get totally raped by anything bearing SS 454 badges.

The only engines Mustangs ever got that really ran with the big boys were the 289 Hi-Po and the Medium Riser 427.

hello everyone, first off just got back from norway, i had a blast.. but to the point, does anyone remember a member on here with a 1970 chevelle 454 LS6 convert. well we have been the best of friends since we were 5. He is currently voulentering in iraq, down with bush!! Sorry anywho anyone who beileves that a 428 mustang will wipe a LS6 chevelle is losing there marbles. The 428 is a very impresive car non the less but the chevelle registering at 4045 (with ym buddy sitting in at 185 pounds) pounds will beat on the mustang all day anyone that dont think so can pm me and when he comes home in 3 days we will go for a ride!

The stock times for those cars is on crap muscle-era tires. Those same cars on slicks would run much better. To quote the same webserver:

"With factory exhausts and tires, ZL1 Camaros could turn low 13s; with headers and slicks, they could turn 11.6s @ 122mph. This was the fastest car ever produced by Chevrolet."

oh yeah? did you see that mph? put slicks on it and it may go a 14.1. if your lucky, it may do a 13.99. not impressive. a 13 sec car is not a fast car. a 14 sec car is deff not a fast car. im just trying to show that they are not what joc thinks they are. just not that fast.

Yeah 98mph isn't terribly fast, I'm just saying tires should be taken into account whenever looking at classic muscle stock times.

98 mph was for a ram air car, not too many of them. those are fairly rare now.

To settle the debate here is a bit of info from a 1965 issue of Car Craft. The 65 GTO they tested weighed in at 3660, and in street trim went 14.65 at 101 with a set of 3 port headers and some M&H cheeters they did 13.77 at 102. Not bad if you ask me.

High Performance Pontiac magazine did some dyno testing on several old GTOs and a new LS1 powered one not long ago. Here's the article: http://www.highperformancepontiac.co...ine/index.html

The very nearly stock '66 389 Tri-powered Goat dynoed a fairly weak 200rwhp and 260ish ft-lbs at the rear wheels.

Wouldn't take much to beat one of those in a lighter thirdgen... Not that you couldn't build a 389 or similar to run pretty strong, but you'd have to swap out just about everything on it to run with a decently built small block chevy in a similar car these days....

Yeah thoes numbers are pretty poor but i think its probably the exhaust logs that are killin it.
