My buddies ford thunderbird...
Hi guys I am just trying to figure out if my buddy is full of BS or not. I have a lightly modded (see signature) 86 IROC-Z 305 tpi auto. now my buddy has a I think a 88? Ford Thunderbird with the v8 auto. He thinks he can take me and his car is basically stock. His car has some rust starting to form on it and the engine bay was less than specatular. But I have not seen him run so I just wanna be sure before I go and mouth off and race him Please let me know if I should stop worrying or not, Thanks guys!!

You've got nothing to worry about. I used to have a big fox body car. Lincoln Mark VII LSC SE 5.0 HO to be exact. And his car would have the 5.0 non HO V8 i believe. Mine had the mustang engine. I used to walk those thunderbirds and cougars rather easily in my lincoln. Nevermind your much lighter IROC.

Vicious 88 GTA, for your information I do have Posi and while the car may suck A@@, it has big plans in its future. Make sure youre information is correct before telling me I dont have posi.

i used to have a 85 thunderbird with the 5.0. it did have a new engine, less than 20,000mi, and a new AOD tranny, but i walked all over a mild 87 Monte Carlo with a 305 HO. it had after market edelbrock intake and carb, hedders with flowmasters, and ported heads. even though i never had my thunderbird on the track i am sure i t would of ran in the high fifteens. so dont take anything for granted, but with your mods also, it sounds like you will take him though.

I used to have an 87 Cougar XR7 with the lo-po 5.0. It was pretty slow. I actually raced a guy in a real ratty IROC once and kept up with him no problem, but you should have no problem walking all over that guy. They had 150 h.p. and 285 ft. lbs of torque, just off idle. There was absolutely no high rpm power. I doubt that Thunderbird could run in the 17's. Plus, the AOD tranny he's got in it, unless its been rebuilt, will probably puke before the race is over. That's why I USED TO HAVE a 87 Cougar XR7!

I used to have an 85 Cougar with a 302 2bbl from the 70s and a c4 tranny. 3.?? something rear. 14 inch tires. It could put on a heck of a show even with it's problems. I would have guessed to car to be in the mid to low 16s. In good shape. Probably had about 160-170 hp. So just do your math. I'd say you have him. His is mpfi right?

Good kill!!!
It is good to see some people asking "who will win?"...and actually going out, racing, and posting the results
The car looks very nice. Toss in a cam, swap rear ends (or gears), and it'll feel like a new car.

I can never figure out why those 301 Firebirds are always bashed. They look like they have a descent amount of power, especially with the turbo.
You do mean 301 Pontiac, don't you, kid camaro?

They were smog engines...had ****ty compression, a ***** for a cam, heads that couldn't flow more than a hole in a wet paper bag, their intake manifolds were smaller than a 12 yr old virgin and they had no aftermarket for that motor
Did I clarify that enough for you?
