Guy with a lime green DART swinger wants to run....Can I take UM'?

This guy is constantly throwing me revs, I see him in town sometimes but he never wants to throw down and run, I hear from a mutual friend of ours( not that close off course) that he wants to line um' up for real someplace for the full 1/4. Her's what he's got from my knowledge:

Dodge Dart Swinger
318 c.i. motor
4 speed manual
skinny rear tires ( not fat enough to hook anyway)
Holley carb
headers and a full exhaust system ( he sounds pretty good)
And a recent cam put in ( my friend said he helped him install it)
He most likely has an intake too....

Do these motors run????
Is this a light car???
I think I can work him, I'm sooooo sick of his revs.

Should be a close race if he has the 318. If he has a 340 you could be in trouble.

The 318 isn't traditionally known as a performance engine. I don't think you'll have any problems.

mopar a bodies are pretty light which is the reason they're a popular drag car. A 318 while hardly a blown hemi is at least as good as a comparable 305. keep in mind that if it's a 340 or a 360 you'll probably get beaten. I think it'll be a good race either way. Good luck

Yup. My friend has a Dodge Dart Swinger with a 318, edelbrock 600 carb, aftermarket intake, hooker comp headers and true duals with flowmasters and that thing ran a best of 15.8!!! you should have him unless it has had some work done to it.

my friend has a 72 duster with a 340 4spd. it wsa once owned by the mopar guy of the aera and he built the engine himself. He's had some problems with it but is getting it back soon. With the clutch slipping and him just learning to drive it he put a modded lt1 at his bumper in about 3 seconds. It's pretty bad.... we desktop dynoed it at 420 hp, so were guessing its about 400

:hail: 340 in light duster

if its the 318, i would still watch out, my friend also has a 74 318 duster that he beat an 84 auto z28 in......

good luck tell us how it goes

later

What year is the Dodge? Most 318 4bbl engines had 230 hp stock. But then again, that may have been "gross". Which would put him at about 190 hp, I think. He needs better tires, that's for sure. And he could be lying about the cubes. It very well may be a 340.

...

I am positive that it's a 318.

It's sounds good, not nearly as mean as my car does. He doesn't lope at idle, not even as much as my car and I have a torque cam, not h.p. so he can't be that fast.

I know what a 340 or 360 can do, they don't mess around, if it was a 340 I don't think I would bother or I wouldn't put a 20 on the race at least.

Well anyway, go for it. I'll race anything. It I refused to do that, where would I be? Just racing other economy cars and box-bodies. Not much fun. I don't mind losing.

I like to lose....

losing makes you want to mod your car that much more. What fun is winning all the time when you know that there are faster cars out there??

Well, it's like this:
The Olds will probably be in the 14s, the Crown will most likely never make it out of the 16s (should it get that far), the truck will be 16s or 17s, and the Topaz will be 16s.
I don't mind that. It doesn't change the way I look at my cars or myself. You win some/you lose some. I believe in realism. Racing is fun as long as you're racing the right competitors. I don't race sore winners, sore losers, or reckless drivers. So it's all cool.

After the emissions thing, Chrysler hung on pretty good for a while. I mean, think of it, most people detest the big Mustangs and the IIs, Olds started to granny out, Camaros got kinda weird looking but did better than most, Trans Ams held on a little.
But here's a question: If gas mileage was a concern, and they wanted to cut down on power, why, pray tell, did vehicles get bigger? That means more weight, worse aerodynamics, and less power being factored in...that means you have to give your car more throttle...so where's the benefit? I almost forgot---crappy gearing as well.

Saw him again today...

He was runnin' around the college campus today tryin to show off. I think I'm gonna roast him. I know that what a car sounds like isn't everything but my car is way louder than his is, and he's got true duals!!! I only have the 2.5 inch back to a flowmaster!! His car doesn't sound really clean either, sounds like it hesitates. I really hope I get to run him soon, If I beat him by like 5 lenghts I'm gonna rev at him every time I see him just to **** him off.

Here's an idea:
Get someone else to ride with you. Some lightweight. Let them sit in the back seat with a camera. Take a picture of the rear view mirror with him in it.
Then get doubles and offer him one.

Hey i have a 318 in my 89 chrysler 5th avenue, it has 124,000miles on it and was driven by a granny for most of its life, u can seriously tell too, it has one of those jewish electronical controlled fuel systems cheapest pos setup ive seen, have yet to find anyone that has any knowledge on them. but my friends 91 RS blew me away when we tried to run them, i think it has either a 3-speed or a 4-speed in it, cant wait for winter to have some fun.

I had that system on my 78 Aspen. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO is call Summit and order the Mopar performance Electronic ignition kit. It comes with a Distributor, ignition box, wiring and instructuions. Then scap the carb and throw an eldelbrock 1406 on there. I did and it REALLY woke the engine up.

No because I got rid of that wagon in March of 98 after it lunched its second tranny . I had the part on from late 96-on. If you know anyone selling a Dodge Aspen wagon w/a V8, LET ME KNOW!!!!

That's a good point, 330hp. I'm sorry, I forget sometimes. I mostly drive my Topaz.

a 318 is about a ball-less as Mopars get. You should own him unless he's done a lot to it.
