Stock Horsepower on a '90 T-Bird Supercoupe?
My friend is thinking about getting one and I was just wondering what the stock HP and TQ #'s were on it. I was thinking maybe 180-210 HP stock?
That's just a guess.

check which engine he's buying, if its the super-charged V-6, I think the above post is correct, but my friend has a '89 SC that is the non-supercharged 3.8, and its power would be less. He also said they put a 302 into some (not sure if that included '90), but just like on our cars, the engines can vary (I think, don't know fords as well).

yea ford stoped putting 5.0 in them when they stoped with the mustang.... i think the 5.0 t-bird is at the 225hp and the SC one is 215 or around there....i saw a guy run it at the track.. had a 5spd in it too... i guess he sucks at driving... he ran like a high 16... i remember because i wanted to get one.... i wanted to see what it would run... kinda dissapointed... oh well im all better now... got my baby

It's supercharged. We popped the hood and looked at it. Plus it has a boost guage
It's a pretty nice car. Leather interior, power seats, power windows, locks, ac, etc. 25 K miles.
They're asking 6,000 for it I think.

There is no 5.0 SC. All Supercoupes are 3.8L Eaton blown V6's. The Blower is actually a predecessor to the blowe used on the lightnings and new Cobras. The idea was a good one from ford, but they tossed the blower on top of an engine which is known for problems, like head gaskets blowing up. It would be tempting to toss a smaller pulley on the blower, but it won't come without risks.
Turbocoupes all come with the 2.3L Turbo engine which is taken from the SVO Mustang, these cars have string engines and can be made to make some nice HP without ever digging into the motor
Normal T-birds either come with a 3.8L natually aspirated motor or a 5.0L Standard output and a few came with 5.0L HO's. They shared drivelines with the Cougar, which also came with various engine combos such as the 3.8L, 3.8L Supercharged, 5.0L SO and 5.0L HO. In 91 02 92 they switched to the 5.0L found in the 94-95 Mustangs before switching to either running the 3.8L or the 4.6L SOHC motors.

I'm with Mustang 5L5 on the SC issue.
I have 2 of them right now. The SC was only available as a 3.8 V-6 with Supercharger (Eaton unit, same as used on the Grand Prix GTP now or close anyways)
No V-8 with a Supercharger.
My 89 SC will run with 5.0 TPI auto's close one way or the other.
Not much of a match for the Mighty 5.7 though. They are heavy cars.
1989 was 215hp, My 1994 is rated at 230, and does feel a bit stronger. The weak link is that junk AOD trans. I wish they both had sticks, but the "little ol lady that bought them new didn't like to shift for herself. Nor did she keep them long enough to deal with Trans problems. The 89 was bought 5 years old @18k mi.
The 94 @ 6 years old w/12k mi. Gotta love little old ladies who like fast cars!

I'm not positive, but I think in 91-92, you could get an Super Coupe with a 5.0 HO. There definitely wasn't a supercharged V8 though. The Mercury Cougar XR7, which is the Merc version of the Super Coupe, was available with the 5.0 HO in 91-92. You could only get the auto transmission with the 5.0. And about those 3.8 motors, they do like to blow head gaskets all the time. I see those motors with the superchargers in junkyards a lot. I think they make a replacement gasket that is designed better than the stock one. The AOD might be another reason its in a junkyard. What a P.O.S. transmission! I had two 87 Cougar XR7's with AOD's and they both blew. I heard you can get an adapter kit to bolt up a 700-r4 to a 5.0 motor. That would solve that problem! BTW, that car sounds like a pretty good deal. They are really comfortable cars, and with a few mods, they are pretty good performers. Is it a stick?

Une quick note to some of you who aren't sure on this issue.
Super Coupes were all 3.8 w/Supercharger from 1989-1995.
There was no Super Coupe with a V8!
The Mercury XR7 was a different deal. The 1989 XR7 was identical to the T-Bird SC for a few years, then Mercury dropped the Supercharged engine for the V8. XR7's kind of suck since there's a lot of them out there with the standard Non-SC 3.8 plain V6, so that begs the question-- why even call it an XR7 if there's no Sport to it's powertrain?
Also the "MN12" better known as the platform that the 1989-1997 Thunderbirds & Cougars were made on were all independent rear suspension, regardless of engine.

On the Cougars, all Cougars starting in 1993 were XR7's. It didn't matter if you had a V8 or V6. I've seen Bostonian Edition (grandma-spec cloth top with gold emblem package usually powered by the V6) XR7's putting around where I live. An easy way to tell the performance XR7's from the other ones is by looking at the wheels. The good ones came with 16'' alloys, while the others either had crap wire wheel covers or 15'' wheels. While on the subject, last night I stumbled across an issue of Popular Mechanics from '92 that had review of the Cougar XR7 with the 5.0 HO. The 0-60 time was 10.8, and the 1/4 mile time was an embarassing 18.04! The SC is faster than that. They also said it handles like crap. That's good info to know when someone wants to run against your car!

im really late to reply, but just thought i may be able to add some info. i own two supercoupes. both 90's.
anyways, the 89-93 supercoupes ran mid 15's stock. and the 94-95 ran low 15's to high 14's, stock.
sure they are heavy cars, but with all that torque at 2k RPM you sorta forget how heavy they are. i almost wish mine was heavier cause i cant keep traction at all in first gear (unless i have 5 people in my car, then it really hooks up).
and they are very luxurious. there are probably faster overall camaros and stuff (fastest supercoupe ran a 11.5), but the tbird is a nice luxurious sports car that is really fun to drive.

They can cook the tires real well, and they sound cool

you couldn't get a "supercoupe" with a 5.0...
As far the engine options Nic is right, 93 was the last year for the 5.0 in the bird, in 94 they switched to the 4.6.
I actually miss my 93 Bird(302). It was a nice car...I might actually looking for a 94-95 Supercoupe next winter...I guess I'm just a sucker for 3.8 with power adders :sillylol:

Okay, I'm in agreement with fly89gta, there were no 5.0 supercoupes. And any year that had the 5.0, the 5.0 did not produce as much power as the SCed 3.8 V6. If you really want info on these, just hit www.sccoa.com (Super Coupe Club of America). You can find out anything you need to know about them there. They one you saw running 11s was probably Coy Miller. He does sick things with those cars, d@mn, I miss my 89 T-Bird.

yea the headgaskets usually dont last in our cars after 120k miles (unless it has a better exhuast) due to the 15+PSI our superchargers force in. i heard that the the restrictive exhuast was made so that we wouldnt embarass the mustang guys that much. (and you will all agree that unmodified early 90's mustangs are not that hard to embarass in the first place)
first mod most of us do will be to replace our resognator, it has a nasty 1 7/8" pinch that gives allot of backpressure.
i personally have never got to the exhuast upgrade yet because i had to buy new tires damn that 315 ft-lbs of torque and cloud of burnt rubber is unforgiving on my tires...
