Metal piece rattling in engine bay of my 3.1, how do i stop it???
Hey guys,
I know u are good with helping me out, so those of u that have 3.1s I doubt there are any of u out there, but if you are there, heres the problem: If I let the car warm up and i put it in gear there is a metal piece under the alternator that rattles. I know where it is and I see it rattling. Now the previous owner replaced the alternator prior to my purchase, maybe they messed up the bracket or something. It seems like a heat shield to a hose or something. It will take a lot to take it out, because it is near the spark plugs, anybody know what to do? Sorry I am a sixer but it is pretty quick and I'd like it to sound like a good car, not a piece of crap. Well any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Heat sheild to a hose... could it be a clamp? I'd say just get dirty and see how to keep it from rattling. Maybe you dropped a bolt.
I helped a guy out with his '89 Camaro; turned out one of the studs in the head that held the tensioner worked it's way out. The stud was loose, and as the engine ran, the stud was hitting the inside of the tensioner pulley. He called me up when he popped the hood and saw sparks flying out! It was making one hell of a racket, too... but more of a grinding noise, not a rattling noise.

If it is more of a tinny rattling, it may be a heat shield that comes on the stock exhaust manifolds. I've never looked at that part of a v6, but I figure they would have it as well. On my v8 exhaust manifolds there was sheet metal around the outside of the manifold underneath that protected the wire boots.
