Stolen car, crash, and liability suit
I don't know where this one belongs, maybe here since I heard about it while spending the day with my mechanic working on my TPI. I had read about a story about a year and a half ago about a 15 year old who stole a car from his stepdad and picked up two 13 year old girls, were stopped by a cop, then ran from him and ended up crashing and killing the two 13 year old girls. One of the 13 year olds was driving. The previous owner came into the shop and they told us his story. He had sold the car to that stepfather who was an employee of his, but the guy never changed the title because he had not gotten insurance yet. My mechanic had worked on the car 2 weeks before the incident. Turns out the parents of the 13 year olds sued both the previous owner and his insurance company. Nothing has come of the lawsuit against the previous owner, but his insurance company did settle for an undisclosed amount, but it was not over $1,000,000. My mechanic was also told that they may be sued too because they had repaired the car to working order, but a suit has yet to be filed against him. The limitation is two years from the incident, which is approaching. The previous owner has just been contacted by the stepfather complaining that he didn't get any money yet for his son who was injured (the one who stole the car). So it looks like he may want a cut of the cash, too. I say too bad for the families, but they shouldn't get or have gotten jack because they stole the car and the previous owner and the mechanic have NOTHING to do with any of it, but I guess the court doesn't see it that way. It seems there is no end to the liability, even if you didn't have a thing to do with it.

That is total BS. The father of the 15 year old should be held totally liable.
In the case above, the car manufacturer could be held liable as well, even the original dealer of the car.
This case makes absolutely no sense.
