Petronix Flame Thrower's ......
Ok, I'm really just kinda fumbling around here with no actual Data to speak of or any idea as to the application of performance ignition coils... but reasoning from what I know.... I'd really like to get one. And so far the Petronix Flame Thrower 50,000 volt HEI looks to be the only coil thats going to even fit, or that is compatible with my distributor/distributor cap. But I didn't think I had an HEI (I have the stock LG4 that came with the car, which is an 84 Z28). And all the other ones I see are either shaped like bricks, or look cylindrical. How would I apply one of them, and is it possible? Hmmm, oh, and if what I'm aiming for isn't the right type of coil, are if there is somthing better, please, by all means.... tell me
Thanks!

GS,
You should have an HEI system on your '84. There are "high energy" coils offered by Mallory, Accel, and others to fit your distributor. You can also use a good stock coil if you suspect a weak one.
If you simply want to "upgrade" to a higher energy coil, you may also have to change the HEI amplifier/switching module in the base of the distributor to be compatible with the coil primary resistance. Make sure you understand what the coil manufacturer recommends with their coil. Many of the replacements require a different module, while some are made with adequate primary resistance to work with the stock HEI module.

Get the Proform 50,000 volt HEI coil. It fits inside the cap (actually on top of the cap, inside a cover) and works absolutely splendidly. I really noticed that it smoothed out my idle and acceleration AND starts my 305 at -30* Celsius on the cold Canadian Prairies.
What more can you want?
OK, here's the extra that you get! It costs a lot less than any other hi-performance coil out there. Much less than the Petronix--about $40 US
