You can do it that way if you're careful, but there is a tool to assist you that threads into the crank. You can rent it at most auto parts stores.

it won't help the balancer go on any easier but put some grease or assembly lube on the crank seal or there's a good chance you'll fry it when you start the engine.

Don't use the center bolt from the crankshaft to draw the balancer on, you can screw up the threads in the snout of the crank; get the tool ede mentioned. Also, make sure you have the balancer lined up with the keyway properly, and that it's perfectly straight with the end of the crank, and not cocked sideways a bit.

NITRO,

Incidentally, that "tool" is a 7/16-20 threaded rod, about 5" long, with a mating nut and washer. You can use a large socket as the drift, or try the large washer that normally holds the HB in place behind the factory bolt.

Thread the rod into the crank snout, start the balancer hub by hand making sure to align the keyways, assemble on the socket/washer/nut combo, and start turning the nut.

Ede makes an excellent point about prelubricating the seal.
