I was thingking about getting a Fiero as a toy car to play with along with my camaro. I was talking to one guy today and he said they were highly prorne to breakdowns and difficault. I've never worked on a mid-engine car before. Now the camaros and birds are so called 'high maitnance' cars, but I really don't see it. Anyone have any knowledge experience with the Fiero?

I'd love to have a manual to FINALLY play with.

i'd go for the formula editin or at least a base v6 model. if you installed a 3.4 from a newer model fwd car it would bolt to the 5 speed and be a rocket for fun. they aren't as bad as they sound, just have to maintain them well and catch stuff on them before it breaks as parts aren't as easy to get.

Dont believe all the bad hype about them, I'd like to get one. Get a GT or Formula if you can. They have the 3.1 in them. The 88's have a completely diferrent and much better suspension but are pricey. Just make sure that you keep all the collant lines in good shape. That is was causes them to burn. Coolant+hot exhaust manifold=walking home. Check out Fiero.nl

I used to own an 85 2M6. I am still stymied by the bad rap that these cars have. I sold it with +100,000 miles on it and the only trouble I had with it (from new) was the damn pop-up headlight mechanism. I did POUND that car and it took the abuse.

I also have considered buying one for a toy since they are so cheap. ...just do yourself a favor and get the V6. The four's do have problems...

My friend had one with over 100,000 when he bought it. He had very little problems with it until the engine went(his fault). I've seen someones with a V8 in it at a car show. Damn that's gotta be a fast and scary but fun ride.

I've had one or two (or so):

There are certainly worse cars out there. Yes, they have their quirks, but really aren't that different from any front drive GM car. I had one that took a pretty good inpact and withstood it very well. The car was thrown onto my front lawn against a tree, and all that was wrong was basically plastic body damage and a bent upper 'A' arm. I was impressed by the strength of the body, especially after seeing the VW Cabriolet that was crushed to the engine after bouncing off it.

As for the whole "high maintenance" thing, that is something that is basically a myth. People that buy a car and don't expect to perform scheduled maintenance will turn anything in "high maintenance" car.

I'm down to one now, but the little four-holer is getting blowby and needs more TLC than I am willing to invest right now. It starts and runs great around town, but doesn't like prolonged highway speeds with the 4.10 final drive ratio. I tried to give it to Ede or Max, but they don't seem interested. Oh well...

The problems with Fiero's are rather simple. They stopped making them in 1988. A 4 year production run doesn't allow the manufacturer to perfect the design much. They're ok cars, BUT parts are harder to come by, and they have just as many if not more problems than thirdgens, and they're limited to a V6 unless you want to make significant changes. BTW the stock 2.8's seldom last more than 100,000 miles. A buddy of mine specializes in Fiero's and has a stack of 2.8's and 2.5's with rods thru the blocks and various other problems.

Fieros never came with a 3.1... but anyway

They arent too bad. The earlier stick cars like to eat clutches. Other than that, its really a typical GM car. If you are really interested in them, take at least one 88 out for a drive, there were quite a few changes and I think the 88's are a much better car. They are more expensive though. Something to think about.

Vader, what the heck am I gonna do with another car? I hardly have space for what I have now... And I might be adding to the collection
