stalls

I just rebuilt my engine 85 305lg4 non cc, installed a perfomer intake,256h-10 comp cam,I have headers but their not installed yet,and a open element K&N,cat back exhaust.etc.
My problem is the car runs okay at cruising, but as soon as I come to a stop (in gear) the rpms flucuate a bit then start to slowly get lower and lower till it stalls.
Having to shift to neutral at stoplights is a real pain.It ran fine for a few miles then started to act up.
My mechanic thinks that the open element is causing the problem becuase of the cold weather that we have right now.also noticed that it doesn't seem to want to shift.

Did you hook up a TC lockup switch. Since you went non cc, that will cause some problems, not sure if it's directly related. But if the TC is locked up in OD and you stop the car will stall. Try stopping in D and see if it does it, it shouldn't in D.

Maybe you have to adjust the carb? Idle speed and/or air/fuel ratios... I had to adjust it when I changed my cam and intake manifold on my LG4. Check timing too (I had to advance mine a bit.)

Thanks for replying.
It's not the torque convertor it still locks and unlocks.I have noticed that the shifting is out, dosn't want to upshift, downshifts oky, maybe the tv cable?.Dosn't seem to have much power either. I've tried adjusting the carb and the timing,I'll try a little more advance. The engine was finished on friday so maybe it is still settling in?

When I put in my cam (because it has hydraulic lifters,) I had to go through the break-in period which was when the car was first started, to bring the speed up to 1500-2000 rpms and keep it there for 1/2 hour. Did you do this? Even after that break-in period (which you had to change the oil right afterwards,) the cam still took 100 miles or so to fully break in. Also, because the performer intake changes some of the heights on brackets and such, you may have to adjust the tv cable (alhough I didn't.) There should be a tech article on this site on how to adjust it.

The tv cable won't cause it to stall. Oh, and how does the TC lock and unlock without the computer?

My car dosn't have a computer. At least I didn't see any wires hooked up to the carb(never has been since I owned it)Maybe I'm missing something and don't really understand. The car doesn't want to keep running even in park when cold.
I think that maybe the tv cable is not adjusted properly is the reason for the not wanting to shift up.

OK, I understand now. Yeah if the car doesn't want to run in park then it's not the TC. The TV cable should be properly adjusted, go to the tranny board and do a search and follow transfixleo's method.

What kind of distributor are you running? The factory distributor that came with the car is advance by the computer. You have to change distributors to the older vaccum advance style, or else you will be running only inital timing.

I ran an open element air cleaner with no problems even in the winter with no choke. Just let the car warm up first.

Exactly, I've never heard of an open element causing problems.

The distributor has the vacuum advance, the car ran great before the rebuild, just the horsepower sucked.
The idiots that did the rebuild will have to figure it out.
Thanks for your suggestions.
