What is needed?

What is needed to put a new cam in my 82 Z-28, i was thinking of putting in a Comp XE-262, or a XE-262 4X4 cam. Is there a better choice for a cam? Should i get a cam kit with all of the necessary stuff, or buy the parts seperate to get what i want.

Thanks

I fyour stayin with moderate lift all you need is a cam, lifters, a double roller timing chain (recommended) some intake gaskets, water-pump gaskets, timing cover gaskets, a new distributor gasket, some gear pullers, a balancer puller & some time.

It is a very simple swap as long as you folow directions properly if you've never done it before.

Good Luck

I was thinking of maybe running Rhoads Varible lifters, and maybe a different cam, since the Extreme cams are hard on the valvetrain. What do you guys think?

What is the absolute minimum that must be replaced. I will replace timing chain, should i replace cam bearings is it a must? I am now thinging of going with a Energizer, because of the low flow of my heads at higher lift.

If this is a carbed car, I'd suggest the XE256H. If it's CFI, the same cam, except on a 114° lobe separation. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WHATSOEVER would I run the "fast bleed" lifters from any manufacturer, except maybe if they were the last set of unused lifters left on the planet; and then I would at least look for another engine that didn't need new lifters.

No matter what cam you put in it, replace the valve springs. It's easy to do with either compressed air, or rope stuffed into the cyl with the piston at TDC. Your old ones are shot, and are actually too weak for the stock (weak) cam as it sits; the problem of valve float will be just that much worse with more cam.

The smaller XE cams aren't particularly hard on the valve train, I wouldn't worry about that. Don't worry about the cam bearings; just be careful not to damage them as you slide the cam out and back in.

You'll come out cheaper if you buy a cam/lifters/chain/springs/retainers kit, and a cam swap gasket set. Of course, now would be a great time to renew the water pump and all the hoses and belts, since you'll have all of that apart anyway.

I am now thinking of comp's 255deh dual energy, what do you think about that?

Thanks
