383 emmisions compliance

for the guys who have built 383s, i am currently in the planning stages of building a 383 motor for my '91 GTA, and was wondering if the 383 would be able to pass emmissions in New York State? I was looking at the Lunati 383 stroker kit with 6.00in rods on the yearone online parts ctalog and they were showing that the kit would not be emmissions compliant in any of the states. If I kept all of my emissions stuff, would it be possible to build a 383 that complies with emissions? If it is possible, what would I need and what should I do? Thanks

when you go for emission, run zero or even retarded timing if it needs it and run a 195 degree thermostat. also make sure your cat is good, there is so much leeway in alot of states as to the amount of emissions a motor can produce, just make sure veryhting is in wokrin condition. but remember, if your car had a 305, it will be tested by the 305 numbers. . but even then, you should be ok.

A CA emission legal chevy 383 (more stringent than NY) click here:

Hey, thanks... checked out the link for that CA emissions legal 383. If he can make that Monte SS run an emissions legal 383 in CA, then I think I wouldn't have too much of a problem in NYC. FstBrd6point3, did you use the 5.7in rods or the 6.0 in. ones? What power numbers does your motor put out? thanks.

Also, did you stick with the TPI setup? or is yours carbed?

fred, am running 5.7 inch eagle forged rods. . I will update my siganture to include all of my parts. right now I am running the stock 350 valvetrain while I let the motor break in, and then I am going to swap everything. . . I didn't feel like droppin the extra 500+ at the same time (and it isn't hurting anything but performance for the next few months). I am still running the stock heads and TPI unit only everyhting has been very nicely bored and port manched and all the goos stuff. Even with the stock cam I am pulling right around 340-350hp, which should line me up to be right at or just over 400 once I get the new cam and everything else. My mechanic said I should have absolutely no problem with passing emissions as far as he can see. From the shop he installed a 180 thermostat, he just told me to run a 195 if I have a problem, and since I am still in the breakin stage my timing is already at zero degrees. since you are still in the planning stage (I presume?) I will post on saturday or sometime next week how I weathered at emisions.

Ive got a built-up carbed 350 and it flew through emmisions in PA for the stock 305 motor with PLENTY of room to spare. Of course it had a brand new high-flow cat, stock emmisions equipment, EGR, and was running a bit lean at the time. But I didn't have to do ANYTHING to it special to make it pass. You shouldn't have a problem, good luck! 383's are cool.... I want one.

yep, i'm definitely still in the planning stages. it'd be great if you could post up the emissions test results. That way i can see where to go with mine. So far, I'm looking at the Lunati 383 stroker kit with 6.0in rods. From there, I'm going to bolt on most of my stock parts and we'll see where to go from there. I'm targeting the 400hp range as well as the 450lb/ft. torque range. Thanks.

my test results were (with a 110* LSA by the way):

CO% - limit = .79 reading = .69
HC ppm - limit =140 reading = 83
NO ppm - limit = 1046 reading = 283
rpm - 1836
dilution - 15.6%

pretty clean I think for all my mods. But then I saw my buddy's '01 blazer xtreme 4.3l v6 vortec (w/ high flow intake and exhaust). it reads as follows:

CO% - limit = .44 reading = .00
HC ppm - limit =78 reading = 5
NO ppm - limit = 625 reading = 0
rpm - 1464
dilution - 15.2%

How the hell did gm make that car have only 5 PARTS PER MILLION of hydrocarbons and ZERO of everything else?!?!?

anyways,
later

One more question...

Ok guys, please bear with me as this is the first engine teardown and rebuild I am planning... Will the length of the rods make any difference in the amount of emissions the 383 would put out? I was planning on using 6.000in rods but FstBrd6point3 uses the 5.700in rods. I wanted max power with the longest stroke possible available with the 6.000in rods, but if the 5.7s are the answer to emissions then I'll have no other choice. What do you guys think?

If anything the 6 inch rods will help. Anything that helps the engine run more efficiently will help emissions.

The 6.0 in rod does not make the stroke any longer. It is still 3.75" and it requires special pistons. This is because the deck height is only so high. The only thing it changes is the rod length/stroke ratio which reduces wear (friction) on the cylinder walls for more durabilty and a small increase in power. Since this makes it slightly more effecient I would say it won't hurt any, and may help some with emissions.

Ok guys, one more question, for now...

Just wanted to ask... I have a Procharger P-1SC with intercooler lying around. Used to have it on my car, but took it out. Can I still use this if and when I build the 383? It would sure as hell be a sick car if I can get a high boost level out of it. Thanks.
