mechanic wants $700 to replace fuel sending unit, is this ripping me off?
I recently had my fuel pump repalced ( $80 for pump, $300 for labor)
In doing this, my machanic found that the person(s) who owned the car before my had done an ametuer job in rpelacing the pump and in the process screwin up my fuel sending unit. He tried to unclog it with a screwdriver, but was only a temporary fix and it worked like a charm.
now it takes about eight or nine attempts to et my car started and every now and again it jurks on hills. Anyway, my mechanic wants $700 to replace the sending unit ($400 for part, $300 for labor) He has always been very reseonable and I was wondering if this is the right price. I cannot do the job myself, not that I cannot pysacaly do it, but my parents will not allow me to do it myself.
btw - I am worried if i don't get it fixed soon, that it will wear out my new pump like it did the other one.

the price has to be for the sending unit and a new pump. The labor doesn't sound too great but if you have to pay some body to do it you have to pay their price. I do all my own work so any price for labor seems high to me at least anything more expencive then meals and beer for friends.

Not a rip off. For an ’87 IROC, the part is OEM list $571.80.
From gmpartsdirect:
25027221 Fuel Tank Meter Sender/Connector SENDER,FU 1 $571.80 $400.26 $285.90
Book labor is 3.4 hours.
I don’t know for sure, but I expect the job is about the same for your 88 SC as it would be for my IROC. That’s a lot of money for a sending unit.
These sig. banners just kill response time.

i cant just put off replacing the unit becuase it is clogging my fuel and i am gettin very low presure and it takes about 8 to 9 attempts to start my car.
NAPA, Pepboys, and Supertrak all do not carry them, they are a direct purchase
btw i just found out that my moms coworker has a discount accunt at a parts store that might carry them, so i am going to get more info on that
so $400 is a good price, och, that one is going to hurt the wallat

I know a new delco sender costs about $300-350, so i guess thats not too far off. The sender p/n for my car is 25027221 and is $290 off gmpartsdirect.com. I don't know if they have the same senders however......

The Sending unit if 19.99 and so is the guage...

The fuel sending unit has nothing to do with clogging your fuel.
All the sender is is a little arm with a float that goes across a coil that varies the electrical resistance that the fuel gauge reads to move the needle that shows the fuel level.
When you buy the intank fuel assembly, it comes with the fuel level sender since it is spot welded to the unit.
From your description, you are talking about the metal fuel feed where the pump attaches at.
The aftermarket fuel sending unit is only the elctrical part that reads the fuel level and sends the info to the gauge , it has nothing to do with fuel feed.

maybe i should have another mechanic look at it in that case, i only had my regular mechanic look at it.
btw - whenever i get my car started, like i said, takes a while, there is a strong stench of fuel. I know that the pump and filter is new. i idle is very rough, a lot of times it gets low enough to stall on me and sometimes on hills she jurks, all these things lead to something wrong with the fuel system to me.

Zepher is right, the sending unit has nothing to do with the fuel pump system. Check your fuel pressure to see if it fluctuates in different driving situations. Also check the system to see if it holding pressure. It could be a leaky injector or a pressure regulator seeping fuel pressure.
I would suspect that with a strong smell of fuel from the exhaust that you aren't buring all the fuel. Check your plugs, cap and rotor for wear and see if your timing is correct. I would lean towards an ignition problem.

Find someone that has a gauge. It will attach to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. It's the valve that looks like the valve on your tires where you put air.
I am not sure where it is on a V6 car. you do have a V6, right?

First go buy a whole bunch of vacuum lines and rerun all of them, this will run you probably about $5 and is a preventative measure anyways....I'm thinking that it could be a vacuum leak. (BTW, it's easy to do the vacuum lines, and since your car even if a 92 is already 10 years old...it's time to replace them)
But seriously, it's sounding like a filter problem or injectors to me.

On a V6 the Schrader valve is on the back of the engine, behind the intake plenum. Find the fuel injectors and follow the fuel rail back towards the firewall and you'll see it. It could have a cap on it, but you can't miss it. Good luck.

**** SHE WENT AND DIED ON ME
Upon checking my spark plugs and wires i found that my wires were screwed.
5 Plugs Were AC DELCO R43TSK
1 Plug Was AC DELCO R42TS (On Number 1)
What up with that????
5 Wires Were AC DELCO DELCORE II 3Q00
( 3 of which were melted, all on the pass side )
( 2 of the melted ones broke when i pulled them off )
1 Wire is a MOPAR QX 2-98 ( Again on Number 1 )
OK i am now mad, i have to go to work in an hour and cannot drive my ride. I will have to wait until tommorow until i wil be able to get new wires, and i can't afford Accel 8.8 right now, so i have to get 7mm
ill keep ya updated

I like the NAPA brand or the red wires from Autozone. I've had really good luck with them. Stay away from the ones from Pepboys and Discount Auto, I've had nothing but problems with them. Their quality and durability just aren't as good for some reason. Otherwise you can't go wrong with Delco's.
Unless you have an MSD box or running a high output coil and module, Accel 8.8s would probably be overkill IMO. ...but they do look cool...
