RHD back to original LHD

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and located in Australia. I have been a long time fan of the Trans Am (77-84), and have just purchased a 83 black and gold Trans Am here in Australia. I don't have the car as it was purchased from someone on the other side of the country which is in the process of transport. It needs a fair bit of work, and has been converted from LHD to RHD.

My question is related to converting it back to its original state (LHD) and the difficulty of the task. Could anyone provide insight into the difficulty of finding parts and a rough idea of the process? Thanks in advance.

Re: RHD back to original LHD

Without an understanding of what was done for the initial conversion to RHD, it would be difficult to assess what would be required to undo that and return it to LHD. Fortunately, parts should be more readily available for the left-hand configuration (at least globally) since that was the predominant configuration. Once you acquire the vehicle and are able to document its present condition, more suggestions and directions can be offered.

Nice wheels. Do you know the mfgr?

If you have pics as you disassemble, I am sure the folks on this site can tell you if a LH assembly or area is modified or original.

Sorry, what is the mfgr? I'm probably going to disassemble to find all potential rust areas. The car has been modified for RHD, brake booster on right hand side and steering column has been moved (not a chain under dash). I'm currently looking at a 1983 firebird wreck that has the firewall in tact, the brake booster is on the left side but steering column is on the right side through firewall.

Thanks for the response!

Re: RHD back to original LHD

Using all 83 parts will make things go much better. The 82-83 cars have unique steering columns with unique wiring harnesses and wiper motors. Using a parts car is a great move. Post pics. I'm always curious how these cars are converted.

is the car an auto or manual trans?

It's an auto, but it was removed, the owner was going to repair it but apparently it was too far gone.

Re: RHD back to original LHD

At least it's not a manual. I was wondering what the clutch release was gonna be like. I think some 83s had a 3 speed auto and some had a 4 speed auto. Either shouldn't be to hard to source.
