Praise Jesus!!! Now Figure This Sob Out??

Alright awhile ago I stated my CAR WAS DEAD. Well well, we started it and it idles and dies and what not, and I had it running and shifting through the gears when POP!! the damn thing jerks forward and all of a sudden the engine is running fun. It not knocking like its gonna blow up and its not earth shaking. Its smooth.

I can't figure out what just happened here, I'm waiting for my uncle to come look at the car. I ran a scan with the ASDL reader and got no error codes of any kind, however the engine knock which was off the chart has dropped to a steady 2. Which isn't good, but its better than 100. eh.

Anywayz, the car can be started and runs smooth at idle and drive with out the gas mashed down. It was a loud TAPPING noise not a knock that was being heard. I dont' know if these symthoms make much sense, but my uncle was thinking about the transmission. I don't know **** about a transmission or how it will effect the engine. But ok..

What are some things we should investgate? Want to insure that we don't go back to earth shaking seized up motor mode again!

Thanks fellows, I appericate everthing this board and its memebers have to offer.

I'm no expert but maybe the torque converter is shot.

very strange its running fine now, if i was you i would sell that thing ASAP now its running OK, and with that rod knocking its better to get something for it now then nothing later, if its crapped out before its most likely going to agian.

yeah, I'll find someone to buy it, it is going up for sale, i will just have to live with a station wagon for awhile.

After looking carefully, all the pistons sound fine, we think there is a bolt loose where the tranny bolts to the engine, and I found a cracked and split vaccum line and problaly think we should change the fuel filter. Help with it not getting enough fuel.

The ECM seems to be adjusting back and forth as the engine seems to be reving itself at idle, but not a heavy rev, hard to explain.

maybe not the Torque converter, but possible the TCC (Torque converter Clutch), maybe the pump, etc. Maybe it wasn't transmission related at all, maybe a pushrod not in right, or a valve spring not seated proeperly. Check your exhaust? Maybe you had a blocked up cat/muffeler/pipe, and that pop was it making it's own bypass...a hole out the side of the pipe! Some of those mayb be a little far fetched, but many people would tell ya it is far fetched to have a car running bad, make a loud pop, and suddenly work fine! lol
Good luck

Did you ever pull the valve covers and check out valve operation? I doubt a rod knock would get better.

a bad converter or loose bolts with make a clunking sound but not consistant, like clunk,ca-clunk,....clunk,.clunk cluck,....etc,...and rod or main will be a consistant knocking, like all wise hotrodders from the day said, "if the engine is knocking, its telling you it wants out!"

It could be that your torque converter does not unlock when coming down from speed. This is what happened to a Pontiac 6000 my dad had. You had to manually shift the car if the converter did not unlock. If not the car would die, start go 5 feet, die. Just a thought.

try the flexplate bolts to the crank they can make the same sympthoms you have stated it sounds just like a rod knock. A friend of mine pulled a engine with a knock out and noticed the flexplate was loose put it back in and never had a problem again

It going up for sale, make offers if you'd like. I fixed where it was coming loose. Taking it to GM Dealer to get her looked over, tuned up and an OK Used inspection from the dealer.

Took her around the block and drove fine, then took her out on the highway and she is crusin again. Damnist thing, but time to sell her. To much money for me at the moment. I'll get another Camaro this summer, but I won't leave you guys

Oy, man, I hear you but these cars suck your wallet dry any way you look at it. Not that they break a lot, because they don't. It's just that we boys (and some girls) will be boys and Camaros are our toys. It never runs fast enough, or has perfect paint, or all the interior options we want, etc., etc., etc.

You'll never get back what you've put in it, so why not keep what you've got?

I mean, as long as it's running right again ...

I've only put 500 bucks in her really, and she is to much in car insurance and I'm moving out on my own and she sucks gas and what not. The fact is driving a station wagon for a few months and getting a least 1800 or 2000 or whatever will help pay off some bills, then I can save up. The other car is mine for free.

I hear you

It's just that I still regret selling my 68 Camaro so I could go to college back in the 70s.

My insurance is only about $250 US per year, but I'm 43 and only buying PL and PD.

What can a guy do?

Its an RS not an IROC or z28 here. I will find the right one later on. But my insurance is 178 dollars a month! and I dont' have any points or accidents on my record, ****ing bull**** age discrimanation against people by insurance companies should be illegal, but they claim its all stats.

Damn that's high! I'm only 23, and my insureance on the 'maro is only $450 every 6 months. And that's for comp.! I think your ins. company is screwing you. Try Nationwide.

Yup, well, now you know where the insurance execs get their fat bonuses and fancy holidays from.

YOU

I talked to one person at an agency and they admitted that Asians had really bad driving records, especially the fresh from Hong Kong types. They wanted to nail them for their lousy driving records--AND I'LL VOUCH FROM 11 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL DRIVING THAT THEY ARE BY FAR THE WORST--but were afraid of being labeled racists!

So the average Joe pays their bills. Ain't the free market system grand?

Thats why they built elevated pedestrian bridges in Hong Kong. Try crossing the street on the Kowloon(sp?) and you take your life in your hands! Go to Korea for the best show though. Forget about crossing the street during the day but you can go to the nearest intersection and watch the daily fights, on the hour, every hour.
