Which is the better head and why?

Oh boy. That's a heluva question. I have reasons to go with either one.
Power they will probably be about even, with the Vortecs maybe slightly ahead.
Cost, they'll end up being about even, actually. The Vortecs require a Vortec-specific intake, self-aligning rocker arms and various other bits and pieces that end up making them not much cheaper in the end than the Torquers which will bolt on using all your existing stock stuff.
Plus the Vortecs don't have an exhaust crossover passage which will render your EGR system non-operative unless you run a special line to tap into the exhaust system externally. And lack of exhaust crossover will also make cold weather drivability miserable.
I think, on the whole, I'd go with the Torquers. I can understand why others may disagree with me, however.

If you are keeping it emissions legal go with the Torquers being as it will take less modifications to make them work with your car.If you are not worried about emissions definitely go with the Vortecs.

I can't agree that the Vortecs are a good choice in any case for a 305. You'll end up spending as much money on them as you would on Torquers just to get them to work, and you'll have inferior parts when you get done. Add to Damon's list screw-in rocker studs on S/R's vs. press-in on Vortecs, and better overall casting quality on the Worlds.

I've been looking into the same thing for my 350. I found that the cheapest way for me is to go with the S/R's.
Plus, I had to make all this crap for this Holley intake, and I'm not about to do it again (TV cable brackets are the tool of the devil )
