Next, I prefer Haynes. It's great for basic work (like dropping the gas tank, removing the rear axle, rebuilding brake calipers, etc)- but the Helms is King for diagnostic work... especially for the section with all the charts for computer error codes, and the section with all the electrical diagrams. (And I do mean, "ALL" the diagrams!)

Helms sells the GM Manual. I bought mine from them. $90, but worth every penny.In my opinion, the illustrations alone are worth that.I put off buying one for ten years because of the price, but now that I have one, I don't know how I got along without it.Could have saved me a bunch of time and frustration if I had it earlier.

Don't the shop manuals have less pictures because they are ment for experienced mechanics who are used to all of the terms they use?? I have heard the best thing to do is buy the shop manual and suppliment it with the haynes manual just for the basic pictures.

I have the Haynes and the Chiltons Manual. When I compare what those two manuals (collectively) provide and compare them to my GM Manual for my 83 Monte Carlo SS, I think the Haynes/Chilton's manual combination is better than the GM (different cars, of course).
One observation - the Haynes has more pictures and the Chilton's has more diagrams. That's why they compliment each other so well.
