Tuning a 305 TBI

Tuning a 305 TBI
is there any way to tune a 305 TBI engine to 300+ HP. I read an article in car craft about tuning a 305 engine to 325 HP using vortec heads, victor jr. intake, 750cfm holley double pumper, and xtreme energy cams, but I don't know if it will work for an auto TBI camaro because from what I know you can't use a 750 double pumper with an automatic overdrive tranny. I want to get this car to at least 325 HP whilst keeping it street emissions legal. thanks

IROC,
You can meet the actual measured emissions requirements and still not be "emissions legal". Some locations require that the engine be in basically original equipment form, with all original emissions equipment installed and operating. The good news is that most of this equipment isn't a real hindrance to making power, but it can take up some valuable space under the hood and may limit your options somewhat.
Power is all about the flow of air into and out of the engine. A TBI can be made to flow well if it is sized correctly. Many Chevy trucks used a large TBI unit on 350s, and some Caprice wagons and SEO vehicles used a similar TBI. Install one of these with the appropriate intake, and you can get some good, "legal" flow.
Headers are easy to install and can retain emissions certification as long as the AIR tubes and oxygen sensor provisions are there.
There are several respectable cam grinds that are 100% emissions certified, and many others that will meet requirements and get you through the test lane while still making decent power.
You aren't out of possibilities, just a little limited. I'll bet there are at least a couple of 300HP 305s out there somewhere with TBIs...
