I don't think it's a bad vent valve
I think you got rust chunk in the gas tank fill vent I think you should get a borescop on eBay and app on your phone 12 bucks and stick it down the gas tank filler neck there are 2 passages the small one is a vent it could be a mouse dead
gl

And here it is, in all it's glory, the previously made of unobtainum "Damned Dangling Dingle of Death" , er, I mean the fuel tank vent valve, of course
Ordered on the 7th, delivered on the 10th (Kudos to Hawks for making it available in the first place, and for the 3 day shipping) , and into the spare parts closet it goes, hopefully to never be seen again.
I figure just having it around, waiting, will be enough to keep the original one in the car from screwing up

Re: Fuel Tank Vent Valve (again)
I gotta admit to a bit of a parts hoarding thing going on, I've got more spare parts for my Firebird than I've ever had for any other car I've owned. It's so bad that most times when I need a part I buy two, one goes on the car and one goes in the parts storage. I know it sounds a bit psychotic but I use my car as my daily driver, and I'm always worried about what the next part to become extinct will be, like our delay wiper motor cover/circuit board that isn't readily available, And so, yeah I hoard stuff

Re: Fuel Tank Vent Valve (again)
What should the installation orientation of this valve be? e.g., which end points towards open air? (haven't been down there to look yet) Beginning to wonder if mine was installed backwards. Parked the car the other day, and could hear it releasing air.

the white part faces downward and attaches to a bracket. the other end attaches to a hole that goes up to the sending unit and i guess allows air in or something?

Thanks - guess that would be pretty hard to install backwards! Now I understand why it has a 4 prongs on that end.

Re: Fuel Tank Vent Valve (again)
I have a 92 that had the fumes leaking into the car from the filler tube. I was able to seal that but now the thing won't stay running. Could the vent valve be bad but the holes I sealed were letting air in to take its place?

Basically will crank and run, but after just a few minutes, with a light load, like stopped in gear at a stop sign, it will cut out and go dead.
Haven't had time to try with no cap, but it ran fine before I sealed the vapors out.

Re: Fuel Tank Vent Valve (again)
Itd take a while for the vacuum to get strong enough to prevent the fuel from flowing... mine took about 1- 2 hours of driving. Then when the cap was released you could actually here the tank imploding / popping back out cause the vacuum was so strong.
Back in the day i went driving and around here there are a lot of military roads... got stuck turbning around at one of the military gates ...it was kinda embarassing getting out and releasing the gas cap

Yeah I been trying to spruce it up, full tune up done just thought it strange it happened at the exact time I fixed the other. Fuel pressure shows steady 45 but I haven't had it on when it starts dying though

As soon as it starts dying, get out and release the cap and see if it helps

Re: Fuel Tank Vent Valve (again)
Ok so this is not my problem, just a coincidence. I pulled codes and got 22, 23 and 34. First two are possible short to ground for tps and iat. Do these share a common ground, and if so can I just run a new ground for them. 34 is map sensor but that may have triggered from the crazy low idle the first two are causing.
Any ideas would be appreciated
