Who do YOU want to run with?

The question comes up 10 times a day, "What should I buy/build/modify?, I want to go faster, corner harder, look cooler". The usual answers are, "What do YOU want to use the car for?, What is YOUR budget? 150hp shot!! Turbo!! BAER!! etc."

Well how does one know what they REALLY want? Do I want to be in the 14's , 13's , 12's , 11's ? How do I know what is reasonable, probable? I read post after post after post, "Yeah Yeah Yeah I want 11's!! Your 14 is a dog! Can my LG4 go 12.0 N/A? Do YOU even know how to put that into perspective? Well I didn't and got caught up in this obsessive desire to go low 12's, maybe 11's, but became depressed and discouraged at the thought of the financial impossibility of my desires and situation.

So I collected information from Motor Trend, Car and Driver and www.car-stats.com to find out what those 1/4 mile timeslips REALLY mean....to me at least.

So before you drop 15 Grand to go 11's reliably (which is an awesome deal considering the company you would keep) without Nitrous, look at the following table and ask yourself:
REALISTICALLY, WHO DO YOU WANT TO RUN WITH?

I would be extremely satisfied if I could run 13.6 . It would go something like this, "You know my 83 TA can outrun a stock 86 Countach, a 90 Lotus Esprit Turbo and 99 Ferrari 456M GTA in the quarter AND I have a time slip to prove it"

You know what you can do and now you now what to look out for and build the speed machine you want.

If I got my van into the 14's you'd see me with a grin ear to ear for a month. 14.3 something like that would be fun as hell.

I figure making it any faster than that will make it totally useless for what it really is, A VAN. I like being able to haul lots of stuff in it. If it got any faster, I would be sacrificing driveability.

How fun would it be to put 7 sheets of 4x8 plywood in the back if I had a rollcage!?!?! I couldn't use my white leather sofa as the rear bench ever again

Oh yeah, good job on listing all those stats. That must've taken a while. I hate it when people think they have a fast car and they ASSUME they will run a 13 no problem. I got news for them. If you've ever been in a 13 second car, it feels like your taking off. 11 seconds make me DIZZY *** hell, almost feels like you could hold a steady orbit.

I've seen a guy with a perfectly streetable '89 Astro with a '99 LS1 and matching tranny. He runs a 14.3.

I have found to www.car-stats.com to be very inaccurate at times. For example a Ferrari F40 does not run a 11.80. It runs in the 13's. Nice post, just trying to warn you that site can be inaccurate.

I don't really need to run with any of those guys. With only about three exceptions that I could count in the entire list, they can't run with the big boys, anyway. I'm targeting the 200 MPH marker in a sedan, and I'm only about 38 MPH away (unfortunately, that's a lot of horsepower from 200 MPH). It's not the fastest time to get to the end of the traps, but it's a different kind of "fast". It gets deeper into the entire car instead of the engine and drive train. The body can be more of a factor than the engine. The driveshaft alone can cost you speed.

If you research the older NASCAR and Grand National cars that would run at 240 MPH for hours on end (before it was politically incorrect), none of them would get much better than a 15-16 second ¼ mile. That sucks, unless you plan to race more than a few hundred feet. Then again, if you wimp out at the end of the block.

It's utterly amazing how many people want to throw in the towel, close their eyes and yell, and some that even cry "Mommy" as soon as you pass the 150 mark. "Umm, you might not want to ride with me any more..."

Besides, I really only need to hit the bicentennial mark once, just to say it can be done.

I'll second the innaccuracy. Seems they were very conservative on a lot of GM cars.

I picked the low 12s since you said REALISTICALLY, and that's what I want out of THIS car. But once college is over and the real job comes, I want a streetable 9 sec. car. Whether it be a Camaro, Corvette, or Mustang.

Not to knitpick, but I'm confused by the 13.00 2000 SVT Mustang Cobra. Besides there not being a 2000 Mustang Cobra, this fictitious vee-hickle outruns the 2000 Cobra R, which did exist.

As for my car, I'd just like to be able to hang with LT1's and the newer Mustang GT's. However, in reality (in which time and money are factors), I'm not sure that my 91 LB9 5-speed WS6 Formula will be that quick. I just want a fun car to drive on the street.

C'mon REALISTICALLY, who's ever had enough? Vader once you reach your magic 200 are you honestly going to be satisfied... or is it quite possible that you'll yearn for that extra 10 mph JUST to see if it can be done?
I'm in them miniscule 14's right now, im gunning for 13's next year.. then twelves and so on.. i dont think i'll really ever be satisfied...
Even if i ran 6's (not that it'll ever happen)
I think it's human nature

I hope to run mid 12's when winter is over and mid 11's in the fall (nitrous). I'm sure once I run both those times, I'll want to go faster. It would be nice to know that I could beat *almost* anything on the street (there's ALWAYS someone faster). I wouldn't mind pulling up to one of the very few Vipers around here and spanking him or the Lambo Diablo a guy at my church has.

As for the inaccuracies, there may be a few as I have neither the desire or the time to verify every single one, but you SHOULD have a very good idea of the "crowd" you can generally run with in the 1/4. The list is just a cut-and-paste job, with a little sorting. I appreciate the heads-up and will make a few changes as they come, but if a car does/doesn't exist or is slower/faster please post what it should be i.e with ACTUAL times AND a source.
Remember, many of the ones from Motor Trend and Car and Driver are the test numbers they got while driving these cars as delivered from the factory. No special tuning, with professional drivers, during a short test session, not the "best" number that the factory can repeatedly test and tune in order to acheive in the 1/4. In fact both MT and C&D many times tested the same car with different results (which is very realistic), but I only listed it once to keep the list shorter.

As for you Vader, IMO the Master Jedi of thirdgen.org, if anyone can hit 200mph I'm sure you can with....enough "force" (I couldn't resist). It is refreshing to see someone want top speed, but I guess since 90+% of people will just never have the opportunity to see theirs, the boards are dominated by the quarter. If you reach your mark, you then would be in a list probably even more exclusive than the 11 second club. I haven't done the research, but if we made a top speed list, say starting at 150mph, I'm sure the list would be much, much shorter. Just make sure you video tape your run when you think your close. Have someone tape from the outside and a camera mounted inside, so guys like me can have a vague idea what is is really like.

An Astro in the 14's? That would be How many f bodies and fox bodies would be stunned by the ultimate sleeper. I see the post now "An Astro beat me today by a car length, I had him at the line but...... HELP HELP HELP!"

Hey Cort351w I really don't make this stuff up http://www.womanmotorist.com/review/...-r-2k-01.shtml but I did add the R

As for the Ferrari F40 I am letting it stand. Another 4th source

Try some of these:

I'd like to break the 12.99 barrier. I think I'd be close if my 700R4 wasn't so damn stock and so damn slow at shifting! I ran 13.81 with a L98 and some bolt-on's in the same car. Now with the ZZ4, better intake and headers I think a low 13 run would be possible if not for the tranny. And perhaps if the planets aligned at a good sea-level track on a dense air day I could crack the 12's.

And I agree, 200 is pretty darn fast. I had my 91Z28 L98 up to 143 and that was pretty fast! I'm not sure I would want to go that extra 57mph! My 89RSconvtZZ4 will bury the 145 speedo but in a 200,000 mile convertible, common sense takes over. Top down, aerodynamic barrier, top up, it may blow off!

I think 200 MPH would be ok in the right car. I've been up to 135 with absolutely no fear and loving it in my IROC, but it wouldn't shift into OD at that point so I shut it down. I only drive it on the street though, so I almost never go that fast. I think 200 MPH would be cool, as long as you were in the right car. It would be scary as hell in something unstable though. I personally would rather have the car setup for quick acceleration instead of top speed, which is why I got rid of that crappy 2.77 rearend.

I'd be very happy running a low to mid 12. Something thats drivable on a daily basis, and can destroy damn near anything on the street. I can't recall the last time a Porsche twin turbo, or a ferarri f-50 chalenged me to a race!

but really i guess we all want to spank that evil ***** next to us at a stop light...
I'd be happy in the mid 13s when i get the car....
hell you guys think 150mph is bad and scary try doing it on the back of a CBR600F3 with a open face helmet, I hit about 148mph before i chickened out.
200mph would be a feat in any thing, good luck vader.

Honestly, if you doing 150 mph there is no need to be scared. You're already in the f'cked position if you hit something and lose control. Know what i mean? I've done top end racing with my cousin once before on a pretty deserted stretch of highway, once i hit 145 and shifted into OD i just kept it floored. I can't say i was scared, more worried about having to buy new body panels when they rattled off I would be happy doing 13's in the 1/4 and even happier with 12's. Will i hit it? Dunno, never been to the track. Maybe i can get there this spring.

12.0-12.4, maybe somewhere in the 11's. Wouln't a car in the 11's on an N/A 350 take away drivability some?? I like dailydrivers.
