Retro Roller cam. -excessive endplay???
So I bought a 2pc. RMS older block 383 from a buddy of mine. In the process of swapping in a different retro roller cam, using the same timing set and cover, cam button, retainer, etc. etc., I'm coming up with .050" of endplay, instead of the recommended .005" - .010".
I already placed an order for an adjustable cam button, but I'm not sure if I like the idea of bearings. Kinda like a pilot bushing on the transmission shaft. Bushing works, why complicate it with a potential bearing failure? ....cam buttons are cheap, and I've also found retainer plate shims as well.
...any thought on the best way to resolve this?
Edit - The current cam button has been ground by the previous owner, so right off, it would make sense that it's short. A new button may solve this.

Get a new plastic cam button; sand it down to size. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-202/overview/
