firing order

firing order
Hello all, I need help.
I have a 89 305 tbi.
I recently starting trying to get it running again.
I walked out and could start the car. it would run, not well but it would run.
After 2 mins I noticed the firing order was weird. So, Without thinking I ripped them off and checked for TDC. but the button was not pointing the way it should. so I put the cap on and put number 1 right above it. then continued 18436572. I am here to say I have did that clockwise counter clockwise on the opposite side of the button. both ways. That is not the firing order on this Camaro.. I need help or someone else who has had this issue. maybe the firing order it was before. I don't know really. after 20 years of experience working on cars. im kind of at a loss for words. the next thing to do is take out the distributor and point the button at 1.
My only other thought is maybe someone put a cam in it.

Re: firing order
You posted this in the wrong section.
Don't worry about where the rotor is pointing now.
I don't know what you did exactaly to your engine buy trying to find top dead center but lets amagine you just pulled the wires off and are going to simply put them back on. After there on in what you think is wright and when you crank the starter and you get that mager misfiring and it most defanatly will not start because it feels like the engine is going to blow than Ive been there.
The numbers you posted is the firing order going clock wise.
I have the exact same engine and have done this before
Place them in that order but move all of the plug wires over one.
You most likely have the #1 plug wire on the wrong cap nipple causing all of them to be off one nipple.
In this photo you can see that the one with the white arrow could easily be mistaken as #1.
It is not.
#1 is the black arrow.
If it does not fire properly after that then you messed something up with the top dead center thing you did.

Dakota Storm,
Please go to USER CP
then
EDIT YOUR DETAILS
then fill in the last 4 lines at the bottom of the page.

If "everyone" did this it would make it so much easier to help them with their questions.

Re: firing order
I have moved number 1 all the way around one by one in a complete 360 rotation. I am completely stumped. with TDC I don't have a compression gage but after years of experience I have learned how to get it there without it. stick my finger over the hole and rotate until my finger is blown off. then stick a hanger down in there and feel for it to go all the way up and start to go down. then you are at top dead center. thank you for your help.
I have a 89 Camaro with a 305 with a 700r4 it is throttle body injected.

Re: firing order
What's your service engine light code?
Also, this thread is in the wrong section.

Re: firing order
OK,
I would put the plug wires back where I suggested and then work from there.
That is where they belong.

Re: firing order
it doesn't have a service engine light on.
and I can start where you said Ron but I already have. I am going to have to rip off half of the motor and correct the timing chain. Then pull out the distributor and place it in right. Not what I wanted to do.

Re: firing order
I just wanted you to know that when the time comes you will "not" have to guess or struggle in any way knowing what I showed you is right.
One less thing to worry about.
I'm not a mechanic but have learned a thing or to about these cars. Like others here I started with a $ 500.00 wreck and "I" replaced or fixed just about every part on it.
I don't think there will "ever" be a time when this car gives me a break.
That's what most here can expect when owning a Third. Gen.

Re: firing order
Working on the timing chain looks complicated.
Not something I would like to do for a first time.
I would most likely have to use a decent shop I have found.

Re: firing order
Before going the route of taking the timing chain and removing the distributor, Take off your valve cover And watch your valves as soon as number one cylinder exhaust closes and before the intake opens this is your tdc check to see where your timing mark is on your damper And let us know what you find, it should be at 6 degree's or so.
