Stock L98 shortblock with heads and cam
As all of us in this hobby know, once you start fixing one problem ten more arise. I managed to get my car painted last month, looks amazing, then on the way home the transmission goes out. So I decided to pull the engine and trans together to do some detailing and install some fresh gaskets in the motor.
This is an all original L98 350, which has been rebuilt as some point in its life proven by finding FelPro head gaskets. The bottom end looks great, no carbon build up on the pistons, bores look great with visible cross hatch, etc... I have no idea as to how many miles was put on the motor since it was rebuilt. The odometer says 63,000 miles, and the car is in great shape.... so I don't think it has too many miles but I also don't know if the cluster has been changed out. Who knows...
Anyway, after a little research I decided to order a set of Aluminum heads and a cam. I went with the Summit Racing 170cc L98 head. It has 62cc chambers, so my compression will bump up a little, 170cc intake runner to keep volume up and 2.02 / 1.60 valves. Should be perfect for my TPI car. And that $995.00 price tag wasn't bad either.
I went with a XR276HR Hydraulic Roller camshaft with new lifters and pushrods. Was going with the LT4 hot cam again but I wanted something a little nastier while keeping power under the curve. Max RPM for this cam is 5600 RPM's... perfect.
My trans is being rebuilt currently, but I haven't decided on what size stall converter to get. I'm thinking somewhere around a 2500 RPM stall should work great. I don't want too much converter, as this is a street car and most likely will never see the drag strip. Opinions on this?
Rear gear is a 3.70 through a 9 bolt. Running Hedman coated mid length headers with a Magnaflow catback. Ported Edelbrock base, SLP runners and ported Plenum with a Holley 52mm throttle body.
Not looking for a max effort build as I'm keeping the bottom end factory, for now. Hoping to make around 330 RWHP with a strong torque curve.
Anyone here run the XR276HR cam? Do you like it?

Re: Stock L98 shortblock with heads and cam
I had AFR 195's on my L98. Along with that cam on a 110lsa. I was very happy with it. It put down 316rwhp with a HSR. At that time it was barely tuned though. I let off at 6200rpm and the power still didn't drop off yet.

Sweet, how hard is it to get the tune spot on for a TPI car? My only concern is the 110 LSA. And would a 2500 stall be enough converter to handle it at idle?
