advice for winterizing my camaro?
Hi,
I have a 89 camaro rs with edelbrock 2 barrel carbed 350 and I currently reside in Minnesota and anyone who lives here or know's how brutal Mn winters can be know exactly what I'm talking about, with that said I am wondering what my best options are for storing my car....fill the tank and seafoam it and remove the battery or go out and start it twice a month?
This car is my first carburetor engine I have owned, all other have been fuel injected.I must say, I enjoy the hell out of the carburetor engine more so than fuel injected.
Thank you all in advance.

Re: advice for winterizing my camaro?
i just pinch off the fuel line and let it run until the carb runs out of gas, unhook the battery, shut the hood, and don't look at the car until spring time..
this assumes that the antifreeze is properly mixed (50/50) so it doesn't turn to slush or ice..
then come spring time, just hook the battery up, fill the carb with gas, and fire it up..

I had a very similar question regarding storing for the winter, so I will ask here to help us both.
If your car sits for a couple of months, should you put it on jackstands with the suspension relaxed or leave it loaded? Also should you take the weight off the tires? Will 3-4 months of sitting still deform the tires?

seafoam is so over-rated..
Just store the car with a full tank of fresh gasoline treated with Sta-bil.
The best way is to add the stabil, fill up the tank, then drive home.
By the time you get home the treated fuel will have reached the fuel bowl of the carb. The full tank of gas keeps condensation from forming in the fuel tank. Sta-bil will keep the fuel good for over 12 months !
You can disconnect the battery or use a trickle charge aka Battery Tender.
air up the tires to 32 psi.
install a cap on the carb vent tube if you have one.
put a car cover on it. and that's it.
I stored mine for up to 18 months like this & never had a problem.
no need to use jack stands for short periods of storage... 18 months is not that long.
For extended storage 24 + months it's best to fog the cylinders with oil,
remove the carb & drain fuel tank and fuel lines.
Steel belted radials do not go bad like the old bias ply tires. For extended storage just check air pressure every 9 months. Before storing wash the car and apply a generous amount of protectant to the tires, interior, etc.
in cold zones make sure you have at least 50/50 anti-freeze mix.
good luck !

Re: advice for winterizing my camaro?
Just remember that it's really important to have the proper mix on your coolant. Nothing worse than going to get the car running in the spring, having it start right up, and then seeing a puddle form under the motor from pushed out freeze plugs and/or a large crack. Don't ask me how I know...

Re: advice for winterizing my camaro?
Great advice guys. Thanks. this is just the info i was looking for. I just got an 86 firebird carbed 305 and have to store it as well. My other issue is do I store it in my garage or store it at a facility?. I just got her so I almost don't want to part with it so soon for 6 months... New England winters are just about the same as yours man...so I get it.
So you were saying she doesn't need to be on jacks, she can stay grounded. Full tank huh? Ok... I'm in with stabil as well.
Later.

Re: advice for winterizing my camaro?
For me and my Z and GTO the only prep for winter sleep time is
just a few gallons on NON-ethanol gas mixed with some Sta-Bil
additive and a fresh oil and filter change, check the antifreeze mix
and disconnect the battery then kiss them goodnite for their long
winter sleep !!!!!!!!!!!
My motorcycle and lawn equipment I drain the gas.............

Re: advice for winterizing my camaro?
your garage is just fine...i am actually going to just go out and start mine twice a week and drive it around the block if there is no salt on the road...otherwise if there is,i will just drive it up and down my long driveway a couple times.my uncle has a 79 trans am,and he fills the tank and runs sea foam throughout out the system and places he car up on blocks and removes the battery,i want to avoid all the extra work,so i will just stick with my plan.

Thats the WORST thing you could do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY?
The car will almost be running on the choke and rich and
not fully warm up to extended operating temperature.
Gonna lead to carboning up the EGR and other passages.
Along with adding moisture to the enigine internals and oil.
Since it really doesn't warm up fully your gonna have a lot
of moisture in the muffler/exaust pipes and rot them from the
inside out.
Not to mention there is gonna be a lot of airborne salt dust on
the roads and places and its goona fly and cling to the moisture
on the car body/undersides and rust/eat it up................
IMO your plan kills the idea of protecting it from the winter salt
and other harmful winter elements.

Re: advice for winterizing my camaro?
Try to park your car in a dry shop garage. Fill it up with High test. every week start it and let it run until running temp shut it off, do that until spring time and there should be no problems. What ever you do don't let it set for months. That's how sludge builds up.

Well, that takes care of your winter storage concerns on the Camaro. Good luck with the bike.
