New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

Hey guys I have tried to join gbodyforums.com but it doesn't seem to work.

I just bought a 1986 grand national clone (its a regal) with a 383 in it.
I'm joining because I see how much information and members there are on this forum. I'm new to (older) cars. New to general motors, and new to carbureted engines. I used to have an 03 mustang gt with bolt-ons thats it. I need to start learning about the car I'm driving and figured this forum could help me get my car IQ up.

Here is a complete list of the mods that the previous owner had (have receipts).

383 Stroker SBC, Comp Cam, L98 Aluminum Heads, Roller rockers, Edelbrock RPM Air gap intake, Holley 750 Carb, and MSD ignition. 700r4 Tranny just built to handle up to 550hp ($2000, Have Reciept of rebuild) B&M rachet shifter, and new rear end with 3:73 gears replaced about 3 years ago. Hooker headers and full flowmaster exhaust. Good brakes, wheels were bought 3 years ago ($1000 have receipt). Great tread on tires.

The owner told me that it should have 350-400hp. He used it as a daily driver I plan on doing the same. Do you think his prediction is correct? I would like to be able to reach mid 12's in the 1/4. Do you think I can (or should) on this setup?

Thanks, here are some pics

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

If cam is half decent size it will go 12's. Those heads are a restriction for a 383 but have potential once ported, but a decent sized cam should make 375-400 hp out of them. Zz4 crate motor basically uses the same and makes 340 hp realistically with a small cam and 350 cubes. 383 will have alot more torque but shouldnt have a problem getting 350-375 with a driveable cam. Find out what cam is in it

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

Without knowing the cam size it's hard to say, but assuming it's a decent cam and the carb and ignition are set up right it should break into the 12's with traction.

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

Needs a good torque converter, probably 2800-3200 stall to shine at the track assuming cam is between 212-224 deg duration

This is a tech site about the sbc, so any sbc related information can apply to thirdgens

Agreed, plus the g body forums aren't very good for engine related tech advice. And this is one of the only sites that actually has a carburated section, not that he actually posted in it, but I can easily see how people with sbc's would come here for help and advice.

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

It has a 2400 torque converter, looked it up in the receipts. I have an entire folder full of receipts and found everything except for the receipt for the cam..is there any other part that can give me a clue? I found the receipt for the roller rockers? Do you think a video of it idling can help you guys out? It "cams" pretty loud. I asked the previous owner and he has no idea just told me to look in the receipts

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

Yeah whats the idle rpm and whats the vacuum and idle timing like? Could also do a cranking compression test to get an idea on cylinder pressure. If its loping pretty good then it must have decent overlap which comes from tight lsa and more duration. Good things for performance to a point. Hopefully its not overly large for the combo

To put it another way, this is a technical board dedicated to the 3rd gen f-body. If the discussion can be applied to 3rd gen f-bodies, then it will be allowed.

Just don't start asking about how to fit a 383 into a G-body...

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

And this is where the bad third generation reputation comes from, disrespectful people like above. Personally, I think that's a pretty awesome DD, and I would drive it.

Anyway, I think you'll hit 12s easily with that setup. I'm similarly set up, and I go 12-oh's to 12-teens in summer air. You may need a bit more converter though. I have a 3000, and it's not enough. It has sixty'd as low as 1.66, footbraking a 3500lb car. As Orr mentioned, heads are a restriction as they sit. Find a nice set of aluminum bare heads, then put your own components in them. Depending on what cam you've got and how much it weighs, with a bit more converter you're looking at mid 11s, imo.

Re: New to the forum, don't have a 3rd gen.

It happens more than you think... But most dont state what ride they have or lie about it, and ask questions on the motor itself. No one is the wiser. Lol. I go on vette forums because i have vette brakes, vette wheels, and share vette tpi related engine stuff. I dont see a problem as long as the information can cross relate between vehicles

Apparantly you don't look at all the forums? It's not quite a SBC, but same concept. As I look through this thread again, there's quite a bit of discussion about the motor, in the FORD MUSTANG.

Alright, people, I already explained TGO's position.

If you think a post is inappropriate, report it - don't post your opinion about it in the thread, because you most likely will be in violation of TGO's policies/rules if you do.
