How much horsepower would it take

to make an L98 run a quarter mile in the 12 second range using a 2.77 9 bolt rear end? I am rebuilding a motor and getting ready to choose a cam. Also, I ask because I am trying to blow away my friend's 2006 Cadillac CTS-V.

Re: How much horsepower would it take

Same amount of power as any other motor pushing around the same weight.

With a racing-appropriate gear at our cars' weight (3500ish), probably something in the low 300s at the rear wheels. With that handicap gear though, ... probably 15 - 20% more than that, since the motor would be STUCK down at such a low RPM that it can't make HP anyway.

Ain't happenin.

Well.... a 300 HP shot might get close. Maybe.

Re: How much horsepower would it take

I am shooting for 400 horsepower. I can't hit 12's with that? The CTSV is stock, and hits low 13's.

Years and years ago, 420 at the crank yielded 12.42 in my 88 IROZ. That was with DR's on a super hot day in St. Louis. I also had 3.73 gears with TPI, from which I understand doesn't really like that steep of a gear.

You'll need better gears with (around) 400hp at the crank. Keep in mind that driving plays a big factor too, its not only about power. Also along with power, you'll need good suspension and tires to actually use this power. You could have a 800hp engine that won't make 12's if you can't put it to the ground.

with 2.77 rear gears?
I've seen a corvette with a 2.59 rear end gear hit high 12's. I have Knoi's on the rear, sportlines all around, Founders performance adjustable panhard bar, brand new michelins z rated tires on the rear, Auto prom hooked up to the computer, an HSR to use on the rebuild motor, 1.6 RR, Dual cat magnaflow exhaust, and about 400 to the crank (new rebuild), and I can't beat a stock 2006 CTSV. I think third gen. org might be the wrong place to ask the how much horsepower question...
