Can this crank be cut?

I know this is hard to do without pulling measurements but I have no experience rebuilding a motor with a crank that is actually grooved (normally just send them out and have them polished).

The #4 & #5 rod bearings spun and grooved the journals in two spots; my finger nail catches it. I'm trying to avoid having to buy a new crank and have the rotating assembly rebalanced.

That looks pretty bad. I'd find another crankshaft.

Re: Can this crank be cut?

Holy crap!

Maybe it could be cut down enough to run some small journal rods!

That is beyond help imho.

If you cut it down to use the small Honda size rods you may be fine buuut I'd find another crank unless you know a person that is a great cast iron welder.

Of course he would want to have it rebalanced then, which he is trying to avoid apparently .

Time for a new crank!

Re: Can this crank be cut?

I might just be piling on here, but I'd cut my losses and get a balanced crank kit. If you really like your current rod/piston set, you could go the long way, get a crank, have it balanced, size and fit everything, and assemble it into the freshly hot-tanked block.

How did the cap fare?

Re: Can this crank be cut?

I finally got around to measuring it. Never really had to measure a crank before cause I've always just sent them out to get polished and nothing more.
Well it measured 2.098-2.1 across most of the journals and the badly damaged one measured 2.045"... guess it's shot.

Ended up picking up another stock vortec rotating assembly for $50. Crank should be able to just get polished.

Re: Can this crank be cut?

Just curious why you are messing around with a junk bottom end your better off with a bone yard engine to start with.

Originally got a 90,000 mile vortec motor (with crosshatching still in the cylinder walls) with a rod knock for $125. I needed a few parts off it (sensors, injectors, manifolds) for a truck I have and the injectors alone are $300+ new.

Out of curiosity I pulled the motor apart. Seeing the damage I snagged another crank/rods/pistons for $50. So after getting the crank polished ($77), picking up rod bearings ($26), main bearings ($26), freeze plugs ($13), cam bearings ($28 + $30 install=$58), rings ($130), rod bolts ($66) and having my rods resized ($140); I have a great starting platform for just over $700 and have $300 worth of parts that I need for another one of my vehicles and a set of vortec heads.

Not to mention most local junk yards or craigslist guys in this area want $400-$500 for a roller motor.

Re: Can this crank be cut?

Not a bad start but with that much metal ran through you might want to have in line honed.
