Larger cubic inches makes milder cam?

I was talking to a friend who used to race/build drag cars, and he was telling me larger cubic inched engines will make cams "milder" is this true? and can anyone explain it a little better to me, if it's possible.

Thank you

Yes its true, the larger displacement has the ability to move more air past the valves.

Re: Larger cubic inches makes milder cam?

Don't really know the best way to go about explaining it, but yeah, a cam that acts pretty radical in say a 305 engine, will be a lot mellower in something like a 383 or 400 motor. A larger displacement engine requires higher valve lift, larger valves, and more duration to fill the larger cylinder area effectively. For instance, something like the LT4 hotcam would be crazy radical in a 305, but pretty mellow in a 383.

Okay, that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up for me guys, I really appreciate it. Didn't really know how true it was or how it worked

No problem, glad I could help. Noticed you're in Oklahoma. I was born in Oklahoma City many moons ago!

Oh yeah, it's great here.. if you like a different weather pattern every other day. It was 76+ and sunshine for about 3 days, now it's been in the 40's with rain for a few days. Gotta love that!
