Electric or Mechanical Fans?

I'm trying to figure out where I want to head. I have an 82 Camaro, with a 4 core radiator, my fan is sitting a little to high to put a shroud over it. What are some good choices for an electric fan? or would I be better going with a mech. fan with a smaller size?

Mech. fans can cool better then electric fans.

There is a reason elec fans are fitted to cars these days
The faster the car goes , the more air that flows through the radiator and you need less fan at a time ( higher engine revs ) when the mech fan is sucking the most air = using up Hp for nothing
Even the C4 Vette with it's restricted radiator exposure turns the elec fans off at 35mph because there is enough air low from road speed

And the opposite ;
when you are idling in traffic and your engine is overheating ,the mech fan is sucking the least amount of air when you need max airflow through a radiator

Re: Electric or Mechanical Fans?

The early 3rd gen f bodys had mech. fans, so why not use them.
I'd hate to have someone cook their engine because they installed a electric cooling that too small or doesn't have a good schroud.

Re: Electric or Mechanical Fans?

Its not too high make a shroud to fit. Dont seal the whole thing off leave some open so at speed the air doesnt stall

Went electric and think the mech overall is better. More steady temp and moves WAY more air at idle than this spal ever could. Just dont want to take the power loss at high rpm albeit small. May put one on for the summer mos and use the elec as a backup. It can never go out.
Pros and cons to ea..like vetteoz said at higway speed most times you dont need a fan ormuch of one.

Flexalite makes a neat nylon (black plastic) flex...they are quiet weigh a few ozs and move lots of air. And cheap! Never been able to break one yet..those riveted flex fans are downright dangerous almost lost my face to one yrs ago.
Car was just idling, too.

Re: Electric or Mechanical Fans?

Thanks for the ideas guys, think I'll stick with the mechanical fan. Does anyone know a diameter of what I should be looking for. The one I have is just way too big, it sticks up higher than the radiator does.....

Re: Electric or Mechanical Fans?

stock fan for camaro shrouds is 18.5"-firebirds had different shroud and used 17"fan.Any fan big enough to be effective will stick up above the radiator,so a shroud will be needed. Some non-AC early thirdgens only had a finger guard over the fan instead of a complete shroud.
