Think this block is salvagable? found rust in my cylinder
so I tore open a old 350 block I had sitting around for a while and when I take off the heads i noticed my #1 cylinder has a good bit of rust in it. i was planning on building a 383. But do you think the block will be able to get bored? picture is below. thanks for the input

If it's still std bore, probably will bore .030" OK.
If it's already .030" over, probably not worth messing with and taking the risk, as cheeeeeeeeep as 350 blocks are.

smart move! let them check it out.
i was just suggesting checking the headbolt threads cause theyre known to wear out on certain blocks.
you dont want to spend money on a block thats useless, or needs even more work.
is it an early, roller-motor? vortec?

its a 1992 4 bolt 350. Out of a truck. so it had flat tappet lifters in it but has all the provisions for the roller setup. its a 638 block

yup, them are the blocks that usually screw up the headbolt holes. kinda thin on the deck area and cheesy metal for the block.
sorry,...JMO.
hopefully it can be salvaged if thats the route you want to go.
i cant stress enough to check the headbolts and threads. thats the weak link.

Re: Think this block is salvagable? found rust in my cylinder
I am an automotive machinist.
I'd mic the other 7 cylinders first. If they're worn and need to go to the next oversize I'd then put the block on the boring bar and punch out the rusty cylinder first. If it cleans up then go ahead and do the other 7. If the block is already .030", I'd see if that cylinder cleans up at .040" and if so then proceed with the others. If it doesn't clean up at .040" I'd think about another block depending on what your goals are. You could have the cylinders sonic tested to see how thick they are and possibly go to .060" if you aren't going to lean on it too hard, but......

Chances are good that it will clean up at +.030". Ask around to find a reputable machine shop which has a reputation for being honest and doing quality work and have them check it out for you. A thorough shop will do something similar to what I mentioned above, check the threads in the block and check the align bore to make sure that you've got a good block to work with.

Mag that puppy for sure! But he did say it sat for a while. I'd be willing to bet that a valve was open and water found its way into the port and drained into the cylinder.

It's all speculation though. Definitely get it thoroughly checked out by someone reputable.
