Where to find a crate engine?

Wow, it has been awhile since I've been on. Not sure if this is the correct board, but I am about to do an engine swap but I need suggestions for a crate engine and transmission.

Anybody know of any good places to order a decently priced, nice crate engine? Also need a new transmission too.

Very vague
What size engine / sort of Hp you looking for .
What induction?
Auto or stick?
DD or track car?
Are you worried about fuel economy ?
Do you have to pass inspection?
And most importantly
How much can you afford ?

Some suggestions

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

Looking at a $3000 - 7000 for a 350 and a automatic transmission
I would like to keep the TPI, but honestly, I'm not tied to it. But I won't do carb.
Not concerned about fuel economy.
And would like to pass inspection because this will be a DD.

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

Are you looking for a stock replacement, mild motor, or a more powerful motor?

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

crate engine depot.com has got a 350 that you'd need to change the cam in, but your TPI should bolt right up for 1934.13. Or you could just replace the stock 305 for 1847.13. Link is below

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

Transmission is another one of those, do you want performance or stock?

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

I'd happily take an original L98 engine. I'm done with the 305 though. No going back.

And I would go with stock for the transmission unless there was more back for the buck with performance.

Goal here is to find something that exceeds what I have. Not looking for raw power. Just reliability.

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

Then get the motor from crate engine depot, and upgrade the induction system to a holley stealth ram with a nice cam, some roller rockers, and headers and call it a day on the engine. That should put you in the upper price range though. You'll need to have a chip burned to utilize the improvements though. As for the trans, unless something is wrong with yours, I would do a filter and fluid change, adding some lucas transmission fluid to it and maybe a shift kit. Unless you go really crazy on the motor, the trans should live just fine. You could add a shift kit for a nice 1-2 gear change chirp too

What do you mean sell the "intake an izzy"?
But I have been considering a ZZ4, but are they emissions legal?

What do you guys think of this crate:
http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...49105279663.98

Just an L98, but a step up from an LB9 and gives me a nice base to build up from.

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

I mean the ZZ4 comes with a carb intake and a distributor(dizzy) that doesnt work with EFI..

I'm not sure if it is or not. I don't think it is because the aluminum heads have no egr heat riser.

The same engine I linked above in post #2
Only has 260 Hp
The 290HP crate engine is $300 more expensive with only a different cam that you are going to swap anyway

Some aftermarket intakes ( big mouth ) duplicate the Vette EGR setup which supplied EGR gases from the pass side header via a internal port located by the dist

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

What would need to go into a ZZ4 crate to make it street legal exactly?

Legality isn't much of a problem since Texas doesn't seem to care much, but I don't plan on staying here forever. Need an engine that won't screw me in other states.

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

If I were to get this long block:
http://www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com/...49105279663.98

what else would I require for the swap? Besides a chip, knock sensor, and injectors?
What could I use from my 305 TPI and what should I buy new?

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

go talk to your local chevy dealer . they have a wide selection/variety to choose from . with them everything is "NEW" , no re-built/re-conditioned stuff . after you consider cost for parts/machine work/ labor etc. you will be happy i feel with a new "REALLY NEW" engine . thats the way i will be going when i'm ready . good luck .

Re: Where to find a crate engine?

Generally, how much does it cost for a shop/mechanic to swap out the engine for a long block?

Trying to get an idea when I start asking around for quotes. Would do it myself, but I lack the tools and facilities (live in an apartment).

I appreciate the help.
