Jumpy Tach?

I also posted this over in the electronics board. More people seem to read this though so I thought I'd give it a try as well.

84 T/A, 355, CC Qjet. Factory Distributor (138K miles), melonized gear for the roller cam, original wiring, MSD Cap, rotor, plug wires.

The tach started jumping around today, anywhere from 500rpm to 1000rpm. At the stop light, when it jumped, it felt like the engine surged a bit and it actually tried to pull through the brakes. When driving and acelerating, it'll jump and the car will feel like it's stuttering. Shorted plug wire? Bad dizzy? Possible torque converter issue, somethig skipping? Any ideas?

Car: check
Engine: check
Transmission: check
Re: Jumpy Tach?

Usually caused by bad spark plugs or bad spark plug wires. But check the cap and rotor too.

RBob.

In my case a new ignition module fixed it.

Pulled the plug wires and cap off to inspect. Found one of the rotor screws had come off completely and was laying in the bottom of the cap area under the rotor. Scrape marks all around indicated it was spinning iwth the rotor. Reinstalled it, tightened everything back up and installed a spare cap that I Had from a spare dizzy, ran it for 5 min and no jumpy tach. The drive to work in the morning will tell the tale if that was the cause of it or not. IF not, new plugs and plug wires are going to get ordered. Thanks everyone for the advice!
