New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

Hey everyone, my camaro is going to the shop in the next few weeks for headers and exsaust, and i was wondering what the best intake would be for the job. Im looking for an increase in power, I need to be able to close the hood with the stock air breather, do you need a hi-rise intake to see any gains in power?, same question for the cam aswell what is a good cam that will show performance gains plus make the exsaust sound nice and stout?, thanks again.

An edelbrock performer is a good set up from the stocker. It should have an egr hook up. What kind of carb you running? Feedback carb. w/ est distributor?

Re: New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

If you want to be able to close the stock hood stay with the Performer. I have the RPM intake on mine and there is no way to have the hood close. I can't use a drop base with the E4ME due to the TPS sensor, so a Cervini hood is on the shopping list now. You won't see much of a gain vs the stock aluminum intake, but it will look much better.

I have the XE262 in mine and it has a nice little romp to it; not too much but enough. My engine is still breaking in but my modified 305 is making very good power!

The previous owner had a 1967 327 Corvette cam in the 305. It sound absolutely amazing but it lacked low end torque and overall power.

If I'm not mistake, Comp sells a Thumper series of cams. Their sole intention is to give that nice lopey idle. You can check them out too.

I have a Non CCC quadrajet and a MSD Streetfire H.E.I ignition system, runs like a dream, just looking for more of a Growl, and a little more Umph overall, i was thinking a new exsaust headers back, plus a new performer intake and a throaty cam would get me a few more HP, i run it on 94 octane

Re: New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

I have a performer RPM and run a 1.5 inch filter + drop base. I think I have room for a 2.5 inch filter, actually. I dont really see how your hood wont close unless you insist on running a 3 inch filter?

Edit: I see you have an 84 Z28... I dont know if those hoods are a little different underneath or not.

Re: New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

what is this drop base that is being talked about, i dont quite understand, i have a fram air filter thats 2 1/4 inches high, in 84 they had the non-funtional heavy steel hood, i should check the clearance to see what i have, when it comes to diffrent intakes is there a universal height diffrence?, like 2 inches or 4 inches?

This is a drop base. Should help it make sense to you.

Re: New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

A drop base would work perfectly but I can't use one due to the TPS sensor on the carb (it's in the way). I've tried 2 different drop bases, and in addition to what others have posted, it' can't be done with a CCC.

Another free thing you can do to add some more "umph" is to pump up the timing a little (without going overboard). Do you know how to adjust the timing to what your engine wants?

Re: New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

Should be able to get away with timing adjustments if you are running 94. Any particular reason in running the higher octane if the engine is bone stock, it really isn't required. Nice that they are expanding the availability of 94 through Petro Canada after the take over of Sunoco.

Re: New Cam and Intake for L69 5.0L

Yeah it was a Sunoco then it seemed like one night it switched to a petro canada, okay well i'll try a drop base once i get a new intake from looking at the picture provided i wont be able to use my stock air breather because the air filter will sit on this drop base?, so the dual snorkel will be set aside?. im not 100% sure on how to advance my timing im sure i turn the cap clockwise?, whats a resonable ammount for daily driver with a heavy foot 2-3 degree's?, i plan on 1 5/8 headers true duals with a nice calm exsaust that sounds good and throaty without being to abnoxious like super 44's, Intake and cam, now i hear you can go to wild on cam's sure it'll sound beefy but you actually loose overall power, i'll do some research!, thanks alot for the quick replys guys

Yeah drop bases are pretty much for open elements only.

Stock air cleaners are drop base.

"Throaty cam" and "power" have very little to do with each other. The Thumpr series of cams prove that. Decide what you really want - that "muscle car sound", or power.

Headers is a good place to start for power.

What I don't understand is "L69 HO" and "non-CC q-jet". An L69 should have a CC carb and dual snorkel drop base air cleaner, even in Canada - unless those things were swapped out. Too bad if they were.

Performer RPM Spreadbore intake, HO dual snorkel air cleaner, Comp XE268 cam (or a similar modern grind from Lunati, Howards, etc.), Hooker 2055HKR headers, Catco 9118 cat, 3" catback of your choice, would be a good running combo. Should sound mean enough to satisfy anyone.
