EGR? Sounds also like timing could be off?

I would start with timing first. That should be free if you have a timing light. Do you?

YES!!! What is your setup? TBI, TPI carb? 350, 305, v6? You will need to do a search and find out on the site on what the timing calls for. I have a TPI and I have to disconnect a single wire up by the blower unit by firewall and set mine at 6 degrees retard.
Your should be different but I do not have the specs, someone else sure wil or chime in after you post what your confirguration is.

Do you have a timing light?
Disconnect the ESC plug (The trucks have this too) and then loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and set the timing to 6 degrees. Tighten bolt. Turn off. reconnect ESC. Continue with your life.

okay - so TPI (Tuned Post Injection), 5.7 = 350. So there will be a little cover on the back of the TPI with three small bolts, You will remove that cover using a Torx T15 driver. You then will move toward the passenger side and find a SINGLE wire that sits on top of the blower (usually) with BROWN and I think black stripe. Disconnect it, it will have a plug. Make sure the nut on the distributor is loosened - not LOOSE - just enough where you can trun the distributor with a little effort, you don't want it to be so loose the engine will turn it itself.... IN order to loosen this bolt a distributor wrench sure makes it easier with the curvature. The wrench in a 9/16".
You will then hook up the timing light (make sure all wires and going to get into the engine) and see what your timing is at... I am thinking it is off quite a bit. You will see the tab when your positioned on the drivers side of the car low on the harmonic balancer (Crankshaft pulley) . Set it to 6 degrees retard by turning the distributor with engine running - some say you can go to 10 degrees retard but I think that causes other internal issue and excess wear on engine. Retard is couterclockwise off the tab (not sure how much you've worked on cars).
Once set - turn off car. Tighten distributor bolt - reconnect brown wire and put back on TPI/distributor cover. Test it and see what you have!

I think the only item I missed is: once all set, turn off car - disconnect battery cable for a few minutes. Reconnect (this will reset computer) and go for a ride.

You may need a distributor wrench to get to the hold down bolt on the distributor. Also, may be easier to remove the coil if it is a tpi car. Don't forget to bolt it back down after you tighten the distributor bolt back up though. Then adjust the timing.
