Something is eating my belt...

Rest of the photo's here:

http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ro%20RS%20Red/

Alright, so what's chewing on my belt? I can't seem to tell, you can see the front of the belt is getting frayed.

The belt is only a few months old, we replaced the previous belt because it looked the same. So, what on earth is eating my poor belts?

Re: Something is eating my belt...

Hard to tell from pics. Crank it up and turn everything on, get someone to turn your wheel back and forth while you look at it. See if it is flopping a lot, if belt tensioner is moving a lot, or if it is walking forward.

also take belt off and grab every pulley to see if they wobble like a bearing is going out. turn to pulleys with belt off to see if the bearing feel chewed up.

Eyeball all pulleys to see if they are all lining up front to rear and if any appear to be out of alignment with the rest of them. not front to rear but perpendicular. Can someone explain this better?

Oh, and dont check front to rear alignment based on front of pulley, but rather the ribs.

Also rusty ribs will do this if the pullieys are slightly out of alignment and the rust is causing the belt to ride up on the rib.

I have seen pulleys do this when the engine sat up a long time and water sat under the belt and rusted across the ribs.

Looking back at the pics I do see rust, check closely for pitting. Change the pulleys that are pitted badly. This is not good for belts in general.

Yeah I know the car sat, there's a wasps nest in the drivers side mirror. I don't know for how long, but judging from the surface rust on the under belly, I'd say a couple or few years.

Re: Something is eating my belt...

I had a rusted pulley once that ate belts. Took it off and used a wire wheel on it and it got better. Changed the pulley and it went away. But check everything as that may not be your problem.

Re: Something is eating my belt...

Yeah, my father seems to think it's the water pump pulley sitting too far back, I dunno. I'll look again tomorrow

Mine does this too, but over a year or so. One side of my belt always ends up getting a little raggedy looking.

Also, Stalker is an awesome game. It appears your photobucket background is a STALKER screen shot...

He's talking about the background from my photobucket album, it's from a video game called S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat.

Re: Something is eating my belt...

Its ok, looks like a great neighborhood. We all come from somewhere.

Yea, I caught on. I may be old but my kids play video games.

I have rode thru a neighborhood like that by accident and it was damn near that bad - at least from my view point. Its called the 9th ward in New Orleans. Was a bit scary and I was packing heavy.

Re: Something is eating my belt...

One other thing I thought about on the belt tho no way to tell. Belts made funny? Manufacturing defect? What brand are they?

I don't know how others feel but I really liek the gatorback belts.
