Gas Tank depth?
Anybody know the internal depth of our 3rd gen tanks?
I'm working on getting a "fix" for our ever-so-inaccurate fuel level sending units so that the gauge actually reads correctly. I'm hoping someone here has one out of a 3rd gen already that they could measure internally instead of me having to drop mine just to measure.

Re: Gas Tank depth?
FYI...I recently had mine out and the tank does not actually lay flat, it is pitched back/down so the fuel always levels to the lowest point. Or it may be more accurate to say that the top of the tank is a level surface and the bottom of the tank is angled, pitched, so the fuel flows rearward to the lowest point. That is where the fuel level sender unit is situated, at the rear of the tank at the lowest spot of the pitch. Now what that dimension is, I couldn't tell you.

Re: Gas Tank depth?
The tank itslef is about 19 inches length and 36 inches, or more. as for your fuel pump assembly it doesnt go straight down, it goes to a angle with the float going parallell. when you take it off i reccommend lifting it up as high as possible and starting with the fuel neck. hope i help?

Re: Gas Tank depth?
Thanks guys, but I think you are misunderstanding my question.
I want to COMPLETELY replace the pickup/level assembly with a 100% vertical rising float assembly for the gauge vs the swing arm arm. Hence my reason for wanting to know the depth. So I need to know the depth of the tank where the assembly sits. I'll subtract a bit for expansion/contraction from hot/cold, but I need the raw depth.

Re: Gas Tank depth?
Thanks for the "help", but not what I asked.
I need the INTERNAL depth. We all know, as evidenced by your pics, that the tank is not flat/square. It has a bottom slope. So where is that 11" depth they are getting? The deepest part? Certainly not the shallowest part.
It is amazing sometimes, just how hard it is to ask such a simple question on this site. Questions require explaining over & over & over....

Re: Gas Tank depth?
from my experience, its not the sending unit thats the cause of the inaccurate reading, but the guages themselves. i have a stock sending unit running an autometer gauge and its as accurate as it needs to be. empty really is empty on it and full really is full.
with the tank being sloped, i dont think a verticle sender will work very well, itll be sitting in there at an angle and not truely verticle.

Re: Gas Tank depth?
It will be sitting vertical. The top of our tanks are flat. It is the bottom that is angled so one end (front) is deeper than the other (rear).
When I am getting roghly 200 miles to a tank yet at 150 miles the gauge says half tank left? Something is really wrong & considering the way an arc works, anything mid-arc is barely changing the signal vs the top & bottom of the arc. So it has to be the sender causing the problem.

Re: Gas Tank depth?
i had a buddies camaro do the same thing. we pulled the sender and found out the arm contact slider had some corrosion in the middle of the throw causing it to stick. you can pry the metal box open over the contact slider fairly easily and check it out.
the problem i see with the verticle slider is if it sits in the tank vertically, it will only be in the top portion on the tank. to get it down to the angled area, youd have to angle the sender (like stock). if its vertical in the tank, once the gas drops below about 1/2 tank, the sender wont even be in it anymore giving you an empty reading.
