alternator problem! wot charge

did a v6 to v8 swap. during the swap my friend snipped a few wires that i have no idea where they went.

my alternators ( i tryed 3 and they all tested fine on my other car) wont charge so i figure its a wiring problem

its a 91 z28 alternator wiring. i looked all over online bt i can not find what the wires do on the alternator. gauge work so i guess thats wired up fine.

does it need key on power to any of the wires?

honestly if i get a diagram of the cnnector i can figure it out i cannot find it anywhere on the internet!

any help is appreciated!

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

Yeah you need to have a 12V ignition source as your exciter wire. I had the same problem.

it is a cs alternator, you can run a wire from the bat terminal to the exciter

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

Won't wiring it to a constant 12v burn the alternator up?

Yeah, don't wire it straight to the battery. "Caution: if you connect a full 12 volts to the "L" terminal without the resistor it will cause the voltage regulator to fail"

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

no it wont burn it up, the exciter usually gets its power from the ignition switch. I have done this on cs and si with no issues.

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

Well I guess I could be wrong but I think it'll burn up if you leave it connected to a constant source of power, which is why it's connected to an ignition source with a resistor. My brother law has burned a couple up running them to constant hot sources in his drag cars and demo cars.

On the linked pigtail - red wire with the eye terminal goes on the batt+ post, the white (brown on the attached circuit) goes to switched ign thru a resistor/idiot light.

Sorry man, i assumed you had an si alt - do you have a cs? Never used one myself, besides the main output stud they have 4 terminals S, L, F and P.

In addition to Awesome's link up in post 4, this explains the terminals pretty well (on the second page):

okay so what it says is all it needs is L to be 12 v source and the main wire to batt. i thought i did this . the alternator worked for 2 minutes then no voltage at all? what could be frying the alternator?

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

okay i have l linked to a 12v source. f isnt connected to anything and s is going to the battery.

no alt output. i took a 12 v source off a relay. and even tryed a battery cahrger to pwer L still no power. the s power take on or off dosnt do anything. ad the main supply to the batt is hooked up.

i dont get it. this is the only thing holding me up from finsihing it. brand new alternator. worked for a minute then nothing after that. went back to autozone and it tested okay. wtf!!!!!

NO, you just need to hook up F and S and the bat wire

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

thanks for the info. i was hooking up L to 12 v key on( because the diagram looked like L went to 12v key on). and i guess it fryed the alt because i went back to autozone a 3rd time and it fails.

now i got a new alt. and going to try wiring it up again. due to wrok scedual i wont be able to try it till sat. so il give an update then.

Re: alternator problem! wot charge

okay 3rd genners thanks for all the help i believe i found the problem.

as always people forgetto include data like me.
when i fryed the new alt it happened when i hooked up the fan. i kept the ground hooked up to te cmputer and gave the black/redstriped wire 12v key on.
car ran and once i turned key off and out it stayed running for approx 30 seconds.

this may have causes a spike through the systems. new alt in wired the same minus the fans and it charges like a champ!.

now should i wire up the fan to a swtich then lol?
